Swedish Sell-A-Thon! Ford reconsiders selling Volvo
Ford announced today that it's "re-evaluating strategic options for Volvo Car Corporation", which in plain English means that it may sell the Swedish brand that it's owned since 1998. The Dearborn-based automaker says this re-evaluation will take about three months, during which Ford and Volvo will work together as they always have. While the sale of Volvo will be no doubt be decided upon during this time, Ford has also said it will be working on propping Volvo up as a stand-alone business since the... Full article...

Howes: Shared denial takes Big 3 to brink | The Detroit News | detnews.com
The stakes could not be any higher -- for Detroit's automakers, the United Auto Workers, salaried employees, tens of thousands of retirees and communities around the country. As GM, Ford and Chrysler today deliver their turnaround plans to Congress, preconditions for any action on $25 billion in bridge loans, they're implicitly acknowledging what their critics have said for years: That their survival depends on draconian cuts essentially amounting to a bankruptcy restructuring without the Chapter 11... Auto briefs | The Detroit News | detnews.com
European Union governments and the European Parliament struck a provisional deal Monday that gives carmakers more time to meet stricter limits on greenhouse gas emissions. The new rules encourage carmakers to sell more small and fuel-efficient cars to balance out sales of heavier luxury vehicles that have boomed in recent years. The deal is a partial victory for car companies such as Volkswagen AG and BMW AG that claimed they would be crippled by new climate change rules that forced them to change the... Full article...

Ford, GM boards meet today to finalize plans for Congress | The Detroit News | detnews.com
WASHINGTON -- Ford Motor Co.'s board of directors is meeting today to consider the Dearborn automaker's plan it will submit to Congress on Tuesday, a person familiar with the matter said. The automaker is crafting a roughly 20-page document to submit to Congress that doesn't seek immediate aid, but rather seeks essentially a multi-billion government line of credit that it could tap in the event the economy turns significantly worse next year. The plan will address executive compensation, travel and how... Full article...

2008 Volvo XC90 3.2 SUV Shown
Volvo does things a little differently from other premium brands in the automotive world. For this Swedish manufacturer, safety and kid-friendliness are just as important as luxury amenities and driving performance, and in no vehicle is this more apparent than the Volvo XC90, a midsize seven-passenger SUV.Innovative safety features aside, the XC90 is merely adequate relative to the premium midsize SUV competition. Zestier performance is available elsewhere, as are more cavernous cargo holds. With... Full article...

Saab 9-3X spied with no camouflage
Trollhattansaab.net's inside informant "Djup Strupe" Swedish for "Deep Throat" has sent a round of undisguised shots of the upcoming 9-3X to the web. The lifted 9-3 is aimed at SUV defectors and works in the same vein as the Audi allroad and Volvo XC70. Judging by the prototype caught by Djup Strupe, the car isn't far from production. The 30mm suspension lift and SUV-like body cladding are obvious in the photos, though the car maintains a distinct family look.
