Howes: Crisis could end up a plus for Ford | The Detroit News | detnews.com
The New York Post last week graced its smackdown of Detroit's automakers with a picture of the Three Stooges standing around a collapsed jalopy. It didn't bother to say which stooge represented which company, but I will -- Ford Motor Co. is Moe, arguably the sharpest of the bunch. Or so the Dearborn automaker is trying to appear. Executive Chairman Bill Ford Jr. and his CEO, Alan Mulally, are balancing fine distinctions in their public statements with calculated efforts to distance Ford from the... Full article...

Winton: Only the strongest Europeans will survive harsh 2009 | The Detroit News | detnews.com
SUSSEX, England -- You could argue that Europe's car manufacturers are in good shape compared with America's, but that's not saying much, and 2009 looks dreadful for car sales here, with the possibility that some major players might be taken over or lesser mortals expire completely. Europe will have to face adversity without any major bailout from their governments, although France plans an inventive scheme to persuade owners of old clunkers to replace them with brand spanking new, fuel-efficient... Give up $600 now or drop $3,000 later | The Detroit News | detnews.com
Dear Tom and Ray: You guys always make me laugh! And now I'm desperate for some car advice I can trust. I have a '98 Volvo V70 with 112,000 miles. A mechanic just told me I'm on borrowed time, as I have not changed the timing belt. He said it should have been done at 105,000 miles, and could break and screw up the engine at any time. Also, he said I should replace the water pump, as it would save the labor cost later on. I am afraid to drive the car at all ... the quote was $600, which I just can't do... Full article...
