Seat Leon FR550 diesel hot-hatch
Coinciding with the start of this year’s HiQ MSA British Touring Car Championship BTCC season, Spanish carmaker Seat has taken the wraps off a new performance version of its Leon hatch. Inspired by the diesel-powered BTCC Leon race car, the new model also sports a turbocharged diesel motor and a racing themed interior. Under the hood sits the same 170hp 2.0L TDI engine as the regular Leon FR TDI, however upgrading to the new FR550 designation gets you a pair of sports bucket seats with integrated head... Porsche may avoid CAFE penalty by buddying up with VW
Porsche's forthcoming majority stake in Volkswagen has the potential to remove a CAFE-sized thorn from the automaker's side. After a failed bid in Congress to create an exemption for itself from the recently revised fuel economy standards, Porsche needed a way to increase its CAFE rating in the U.S. This might be achieved by combining Porsche and VW's emissions and fuel-economy numbers into one lump sum, thus preserving the automaker's performance heritage. While this certainly isn't anything new &ndash... Volkswagen Beetle police cruiser, the "bug-erceptor"
It's a rather undignified process, being pulled over by the police. Next time you're sitting at the side of the road with the lights flashing in your rearview mirror, just think of this: at least you weren't pulled over by a VW Beetle. Unless you reside in Blount County, Tennessee, where Archie Garner, a 40-plus-year police veteran, nabbed this 1972 Beetle in a DUI case and summarily converted it into an Interceptor. Not that it does too much intercepting, being capable of only 70 miles per hour or so... Full article...

Porsche may use VW stake to avoid emissions rules
Porsche has a major challenge on its hands in the form of strict new fuel-economy and emissions regulations set to roll in across the U.S. and Europe in coming years. Carmakers are being forced to improve their average fleet-wide mileage and carbon emissions levels and for a niche brand like Porsche, which sells a limited range of high-performance models, meeting these new standards will be near impossible given the current deadlines. To get around the new regulations, Porsche may be able to merge its... Full article...

Auto briefs
Dura Automotive Systems Inc., a Rochester Hills auto-parts maker that failed to exit bankruptcy last year because of credit market turmoil, may now face a probe by bondholders. James W. Korth, the managing partner of East Lansing-based bond brokerage J.W. Korth & Co., is seeking approval from the federal judge in Wilmington, Delaware, overseeing Dura's bankruptcy to investigate the company's value. Korth and his clients own more than $100 million of Dura bonds, he said in the request, filed without an... Full article...

370HP Golf R32 by ABT Sportsline
The Golf R32 is by no means slow but the sheer number of tuning kits available for the torquey hot-hatch reveals there are a lot of people out there who disagree. The latest kit is from Germany’s ABT Sportsline, and although it’s not as nearly as potent as HGP’s 640 twin-turbo model, the new tuner R32 still packs some serious punch. The ABT Volkswagen Golf R32 is powered by a V6 engine with 370hp 272kW on tap. This is enough to propel the car from 0-100km/h in just five seconds flat, down from the... Full article...
