Virtually stress-free assembly line: Ford lab examines worker strain during a vehicle's design stage
In a dimly lit room in Dearborn, a Ford Motor Co. employee carefully places the center console into a partially assembled Fusion sedan and struggles to line it up with other components. Or so it seems to him. Everyone else in the room sees a man wearing an elaborate headpiece and a harness studded with reflective balls moving inside a metal rig that vaguely resembles the outline of a car. Infrared cameras track his movements and feed the images into a powerful computer system. The computer monitors the... Full article...

Dispute cited in top Chrysler engineer's departure
DETROIT -- One of Chrysler LLC's top engineers left the company Tuesday because of a dispute with senior managers, a person with knowledge of the situation said Tuesday. Mike Donoughe was leading the company's effort to develop a new generation of global midsize cars. The person said Donoughe clashed with Peter Arnell, a marketing consultant hired by Chrysler Chairman and Chief Executive Bob Nardelli. The person asked not to be named because Chrysler wasn't publicizing the reason for Donoughe's... Full article...

Calif. board expected to lower requirement for green autos
WASHINGTON -- The California Air Resources Board is expected to vote Thursday to cut the number of zero-emission vehicles the top six automakers are required to build annually, beginning in 2012, but it is not clear how big the reduction will be. CARB Chairwoman Mary Nichols told reporters in a conference call Tuesday that the board is likely to revise a proposal its staff recommended last month that called for cutting the vehicle count 90 percent, from 25,000 to 2,500. She said the final proposal... Full article...

Toyota shopping mall opens in Japan
In what may lead to a new trend among carmakers, the cash-rich ones at least, Toyota has opened a new shopping mall aimed at selling and promoting its cars. The new site is located in Yokohama, Japan, and features the usual assortment of restaurants and specialty stores you would find in any shopping mall. One key difference, however, is the display vehicles and dealers that litter the mall’s corridors. The mall is completely owned and operated by Toyota and only opened its doors last week. The move... Farley may replace Ford's Mulally
Ford Motor Co.'s new chief marketing officer, Jim Farley, and the president of its Americas group, Mark Fields, are both on the short list of executives identified by the company to succeed CEO Alan Mulally. But Ford stressed any talk of Mulally's leaving is "premature." Joe Laymon, Ford's human resources chief, made public the names on his succession list for Mulally during an interview with Automotive News that was published Monday. Ford confirmed the details of that report, but said such planning is... Full article...

Toyota thinks outside box
Toyota likes to think of its quirky, boxy Scion as a 21st-century chariot of the soul -- not just an affordable car, but also a unique expression of the young, hip person who Toyota hopes is driving it. Now Toyota's Scion enthusiasts will have even more "me time": a marketing campaign with an underground vibe intended to show just how much their chosen transportation reflects their personality. With an eye to the social networking ethos that has made Facebook and MySpace wildly popular, Toyota will let... Full article...

Online, 'ad' a fuzzy concept
An odd and controversial video has been cropping up in the online world of auto enthusiasts. The five-minute spot, made by a company called powerTV, shows a group of car customizers rebuilding a Ford Mustang with a high-performance engine made by General Motors Corp. The video, posted to a host of auto fan sites by a blogger named PowerMelissa, has all the hallmarks of one made by die-hard auto enthusiasts. But this particular production has riled scores of bloggers, who say powerTV is shamelessly using... Full article...

Hyundai confirms Avante hybrid for 2009
Hyundai has announced that it will begin to mass produce hybrid cars next year in a move certain to please an environmentally conscious market and which is likely to cement its position as a top five automaker. The new Hyundai hybrid vehicle will be called the ‘Avante’ and it will arrive by the middle of next year. In 2010, Hyundai will follow it up with a second midsize hybrid model and eventually a fuel-cell model in 2012. While hybrids have been around for years, Hyundai is predicting large... Lexus brand isn't flying in Toyota's home market
In trying to establish a Japanese-market foothold for Lexus, Toyota has seemingly fallen prey to the same tactic that made the Cadillac Cimmaron such a maroon. When trying to launch a brand, especially an upscale brand, it's not advisable to rebadge existing models and crank up the price. It doesn't seem to matter how good the car is, or how swanky the new $10-million-a-pop showroom is, once an Altezza, always an Altezza, and paying 20 percent more for the same car with a different logo is rightfully... Britain's Telegraph picks their 100 most beautiful cars of all time!
The Telegraph is a major British newspaper and it's just published a list of what it deems the 100 most beautiful cars of all time. No matter what country you visit, regional automotive journalists seem to have some degree of bias toward the local brands. British publications, although they often feature outstanding writing, seem to be particularly egregious in this area. I personally have always had a soft spot in my heart for old British sports cars, particularly the Triumph TR6 and the Austin-Healy... Full article...
