Toyota confident sales will pick up in the future | detnews.com | The Detroit News
Toyota Motor Corp.'s highest-ranking executive in the United States said Thursday that he hoped the automaker would start earning money here again next year after its unexpectedly deep slide into the red. Yoshimi Inaba, a former U.S. sales chief recently rehired by Toyota, said he was seeing signs that demand in the U.S. auto market was picking up and was confident about its long-term prospects. "I'm a very firm believer that this market will bounce back sooner or later," said Inaba, the New York-based... Full article...

Peel out with a set of orange-oil tires | detnews.com | The Detroit News
Automakers and their suppliers love to talk about technology transfers, especially those that move from the highly competitive and exciting environment of racetracks to the mundane but much more important public roadways. The Yokohama Tire Corp. has a new tech transfer ready to roll -- tires made by using the oil from orange peels to replace much of the petroleum-based oil that goes into tire production. Officially, Yokohama's new tire is the dB Super E-spec, which the Japanese rubber company calls "the... Full article...

Mercedes system helps keep drowsy drivers awake | detnews.com | The Detroit News
Mercedes-Benz has become the latest automaker to offer high-tech help to fight drowsiness while driving. Standard on the redesigned 2010 E-class models will be Mercedes' new Attention Assist system, designed to detect drowsiness on the part of the driver in the early stages, before it becomes a real danger, the German automaker said. It uses various sensors to monitor the driver's behavior, including slight weaving of the vehicle that results in "patterns of minor steering corrections," Mercedes said... Full article...

Outstanding new cars buck auto crisis | detnews.com | The Detroit News
Just because the auto industry is in crisis does not mean that appealing new or revised cars and trucks have disappeared. Starting at the small end of the scale but punching well above its weight is the Kia Soul. This Korean newcomer steps into a sub-compact class already populated by several strong contenders, notably the Scion xB and the Nissan Cube. But in a category where cereal box-styling seems to dominate, the Soul manages to carve its niche with a design that looks practical and sporty at the... Full article...

GM, CAW reach tentative deal | detnews.com | The Detroit News
General Motors Corp. and the Canadian Auto Workers union have reached a tentative agreement in negotiations to reduce labor costs as mandated by the Canadian and Ontario governments as a condition of securing government loans. CAW President Ken Lewenza said the agreement between the United Auto Workers and GM a day earlier put pressure on the Canadian talks, as well as the need for GM to be able to put a comprehensive restructured business plan on President Barack Obama's desk within three days. Ford unveils programs to woo GM, Chrysler buyers | detnews.com | The Detroit News
As Chrysler LLC and General Motors Corp. move to dismantle brands and close dealerships, other automakers are moving in to pick up the pieces. Analysts said it will take a couple more months to fully gauge consumer reaction to these moves, but Haig Stoddard of IHS Global Insight said one thing is already clear: "Ford is likely to be the big volume winner." While Chrysler touts the benefits of "quick-rinse" bankruptcy -- something GM is expected to soon enter into as well -- Ford Motor Co. is in the... Full article...

Survey: Honda most popular with suppliers | detnews.com | The Detroit News
Honda Motor Co. enjoys the best relations with its parts suppliers, displacing Toyota Motor Corp., which had held the top spot since 2002 in an annual survey of suppliers of the top six vehicle producers in North America. Detroit's automakers still lag the Japanese, but the gap has narrowed as Japan's leading carmakers have lost ground with suppliers in North America. Among the U.S. automakers, Ford Motor Co. extended its lead over its domestic rivals after improving its scores for the second year in a... Full article...

Detroit cars still in teens' daydreams | detnews.com | The Detroit News
"Dad, would you buy me a Camaro?" Before I could muster an answer to my 17-year-old daughter's question, she spotted a new Ford Mustang. "That's a cool car, too," she said, as I drove her to school one morning. There followed a brief and poorly received lecture from me on why a powerful rear-wheel-drive sports model is probably not the best choice for a teenager's first car. Further efforts to ascertain what makes the Mustang and Camaro "cool" in a 17-year-old's opinion did not reveal much. But the... Full article...
