GM's culture change has a ways to go | detnews.com | The Detroit News
The new GM doesn't wear ties, doubtless a painful hit to the sales of Hermes and Ermenegildo Zegna. But if open collars are a harbinger of a sharper, faster and hipper culture, a prerequisite for success in the cutthroat auto industry, that's only what they are -- a harbinger. Watching CEO Fritz Henderson's frank admission this week that bankruptcy-slimmed General Motors Co. didn't fully appreciate the perception gulf between would-be customers and its competitive cars and trucks gives new meaning to... 'Clunkers' rules ease as sales soar | detnews.com | The Detroit News
The Obama administration agreed Thursday to expand the "cash for clunkers" program to vehicles already in the production pipeline. Car buyers had been limited to fuel-efficient vehicles in showrooms and on lots, and some dealers reported shortages. The Transportation Department's decision to broaden it came just days after a request by Michigan lawmakers who said it would increase consumers' choices and encourage more to take advantage of the incentive program, which already has spurred a dramatic... Japanese sales climb in 'clunkers' program | detnews.com | The Detroit News
-- Japanese automakers have gained significant ground on domestic automakers in the U.S. government's $3 billion "cash for clunkers" program. General Motors Co., Ford Motor Co. and Chrysler Group LLC saw a dropoff in sales while those of foreign rivals rose in the latest tally of "cash for clunkers" sales, as Toyota Motor Corp. dethroned GM as the top seller. Toyota has sold 18.9 percent of vehicles purchased through the clunkers program, surpassing GM's 17.6 percent. Through the first two weeks of the... Full article...

'Clunker' sales borrow from 2010 market | detnews.com | The Detroit News
The unexpected success of the government's "cash for clunkers" program is boosting sales dramatically -- but is probably pulling forward some purchases that would have taken place next year. Forecasting firm IHS Global Insight has increased its U.S. auto sales estimate for this year because of the robust response to the government-funded plan. But it is paring its 2010 forecast. George Magliano, director of North American auto industry research at IHS, said the annualized selling rate this month has... Full article...

Buick's stellar LaCrosse is fit for a king | detnews.com | The Detroit News
The 2010 Buick LaCrosse is the best car no one will buy. It's a shame really. The redesigned large sedan is top notch, a car fit for a king, or at least an emperor. People should line up at Buick dealerships in droves to order the new LaCrosse, which arrives this month. It's well-priced, sharp-looking and comes with a stellar interior, perhaps the best inside makeover General Motors Co. has ever completed. But they won't. When Buick tested the new LaCrosse against the competition, vehicles such as the... Full article...

'Clunkers' program gives Ford a boost | detnews.com | The Detroit News
As the federal government looks to add billions more to the "cash for clunkers" program, at least one Detroit automaker is attributing a boost in July sales to the popular effort. Ford Motor Co. will report its first monthly year-over-year sales gain in nearly two years today, thanks to a much-needed push from the program, company officials said Sunday. The Dearborn automaker would not provide specific figures until today. The $1 billion federal program to retire less efficient vehicles is all but out... Full article...
