Nissan GT-R blurs line between video games, reality | detnews.com | The Detroit News
I finally understand why Godzilla stomps into a city and breathes fire everywhere. He just wants to be noticed. When you're the biggest, baddest Lacertilia on the block, people should run away screaming in fear. That's how most people react to monsters. But in Detroit, if it doesn't wear a bow tie, blue oval or come with a cross-haired grille, people just don't seem to take interest. When Nissan Motor Co. called to tell me there was a spare 2010 Nissan GT-R sitting around and wondered if I could squeeze... Full article...

GM to lay off about 1,000 | detnews.com | The Detroit News
General Motors Co. needs to lay off about 1,000 white-collar workers this month because only 1,900 accepted early retirement and buyout offers, the automaker said Wednesday. The 1,000 involuntary cuts are part of GM's plan to slash 6,000 salaried jobs by the end of the year and most will hit southeastern Michigan communities with GM operations such as Detroit, Warren, Milford and Pontiac. The area already is reeling from pending GM factory closures and blue-collar job cuts from earlier this year. GM... Full article...

Whether Germans like it or not, GM won't be going away | detnews.com | The Detroit News
The only question I have about General Motors Co.'s incipient spin-off of its Adam Opel GmbH unit in Germany is this: Are they popping corks on German or the old Russian equivalent, that sparkling wine from Georgia favored in Soviet times? For the better part of 80 years -- and, Lord knows, certainly for the past 15 -- so many of the Germans I knew who worked for Opel wanted nothing more than to slip the yoke of American oppression they so readily blamed for all that ailed their beloved , the yellow... Sneak peek: 2011 Kia Optima | detnews.com | The Detroit News
Designed with a sporty coupe-like feel, the all-new Optima will debut for the 2011 model year with a distinctive look -- due in part to its uniquely designed C-pillar. Power-wise, the Optima will use the same engine as the 2011 Sonata, which will be offered in 4- and 6-cylinder versions, and -- rumor has it -- will follow the Sonata with a hybrid option. BMW Z4 roadster offers enlightening ride | detnews.com | The Detroit News
Here are a few automotive rules to live by: Downshift the turn. Don't text message or e-mail friends, colleagues or any prince from Nigeria behind the wheel. Own a roadster before you die. Perhaps, it's because I'm in my midlife years -- at 41, I'm certainly hacking through the back nine -- that I've developed such an affinity for drop-top two seaters. Or, maybe, it was just that I was sitting behind the steering wheel of the 2009 BMW Z4 roadster. Every time I fired up the 3-liter direct injection... Full article...

Obama fuel rules may tilt field | detnews.com | The Detroit News
-- The Obama administration's long-awaited proposed regulation setting fuel efficiency standards at 35.5 miles per gallon by the 2016 model year will be rolled out as early as this week. But the rules may give some automakers a competitive advantage. The regulation is expected to mirror a California provision that gives less-stringent tailpipe emissions requirements to automakers with annual U.S. sales of no more than 400,000 vehicles, mainly German and Asian manufacturers. Reducing emissions is best... Full article...

FJ Cruiser: Only for serious off-roaders | detnews.com | The Detroit News
The M1A2 Abrams tank has better visibility than the 2009 FJ Cruiser. It's not really a fair comparison -- the tank includes high-tech optics to operate its 120 mm smooth bore gun and the FJ Cruiser has a windshield slightly larger than a basement window. Having had the opportunity to ride in the tank recently, I can tell you that it can spin its turret in a few seconds, providing 360 degrees of vision, and that it would never be parallel parked. The FJ Cruiser, meanwhile, now comes with a backup camera... Full article...

Missouri Hummer dealer freshens product line with guns | detnews.com | The Detroit News
Jim Lynch owns $7.5 million worth of car dealership devoted to a brand that's no longer in production and might or might not continue to exist, depending on the whim of the Chinese government. This is not a good business model. For seven years, back when the Hummer H1 roamed the Earth, Lynch Hummer of Chesterfield, Mo., was the leading Hummer dealer in America. It could barely see the second-place dealer in its enormous side-view mirrors. That ended in 2003, when the pencil-necked sissies at GM... Full article...

Building a classic cruiser from the frame up | detnews.com | The Detroit News
So you want to drive your own classic car in next year's Woodward Dream Cruise, but you can't find a mid-'50s Chevy or early-'30s hot-rod ready to be restored. Don't worry, you can buy all of the components and build your own brand-new classic. Since the late 1950s, Experi-Metal Inc. of Sterling Heights has been supplying automakers with stamped metal components -- body panels and trim -- used in the construction of prototype vehicles. Because automakers have yet to produce the tools needed to stamp out... Full article...

Keeping up sales after 'clunkers' | detnews.com | The Detroit News
Now that the "cash for clunkers" program is over, the big question is whether American consumers will slump back into unconsciousness as the adrenaline jolt of the government incentive wears off. Last month the annualized U.S. sales rate topped 13 million units, as buyers flocked to showrooms to take advantage of up to $4,500 in discounts under the program. That sales rate looks pretty impressive considering it had dipped to below 10 million earlier this year. The problem is that the auto industry had... Full article...
