Buy American, get Chinese engine
OSHAWA, Ontario -- General Motors car engines were once the stuff of American legend. The Beach Boys sang, "nothing can touch my 409," about a powerful Chevy V-8. Oldsmobile owners in 1981 were so angered that their cars had been fitted with Chevrolet engines instead of Oldsmobile "Rockets," the subject of another hit song, that they successfully sued GM over the swap. The company has since eliminated brand distinctions between engines, saddling them with names unlikely to inspire songwriters, like... Full article...

Tesla speeds up export plans to take advantage of low dollar
Carmakers may be finding it tough importing cars into the U.S. because of the weak dollar but on the flipside exporting cars outside of the States is proving to be very lucrative. This is especially the case with niche carmakers like Tesla, whose all-electric roadster, which sells in the U.S. for about $100,000, effectively becomes cheaper for markets like Europe and Asia because of the falling dollar. Unfortunately, Tesla has no export plan in place and with the 600 cars scheduled to be produced this... Full article...

California easing zero-emissions mandate for carmakers
California may be well known for its stance against pollution when it comes to legislating on emissions rules, but environmentalists have become incensed about the state’s increasingly lax attitude towards reducing pollution through regulation of new zero-emissions vehicles. In 1990, California adopted legislation that required 10% of carmakers’ fleets be zero-emissions vehicles by 2003. When it became clear this goal wasn’t going to be reached, the rule was changed to include ‘low-emissions’... Full article...

Axle strike may threaten Malibu
The strike at auto parts maker American Axle could threaten production of General Motors Corp.'s hot-selling Chevrolet Malibu sedan, sources familiar with the situation said Monday. The recently launched Malibu is a critical product for GM and already is in short supply. So far the only GM factories affected by the United Auto Workers union work stoppage have been ones that produce slower selling large trucks and full-size sedans. American Axle & Manufacturing Holdings Inc. doesn't directly supply parts... Full article...

Clean-vehicle contest may prove a nonstarter
In this age of endless reality TV, it was bound to happen. Mix a jolt of Hollywood hype, private venture capital and the science community to help save the planet. In case you missed it, the X Prize Foundation -- the same California-based group determined to jump-start commercial space flight and lunar exploration -- is sponsoring a race to create a viable, affordable vehicle capable of going 100 miles on a gallon of gas, or energy equivalent. The winners -- one for a city car and another for a... Full article...

Tesla boss confirms 2009 European launch
Last week we reported that Tesla was speeding up its export program to take advantage of the weak U.S. dollar, and now the electric car company’s CEO has confirmed the roadster will be sold in Europe by the third quarter of next year. Although the Tesla’s chassis is manufactured in the UK by Lotus, most of its hardware, including the expensive batteries, is put together in California. This makes exporting the car to Europe very lucrative for Tesla. Speaking with the Financial Times, Tesla boss... Full article...

GM to close Texas plant for three weeks
General Motors Corp. said Saturday two pickup truck plants idled by the strike at parts maker American Axle will reopen for about a month each. At the same time, an SUV plant in Arlington, Texas, will be shut down. GM spokesman Dan Flores said the automaker managed to find enough parts to allow factories in Oshawa, Ontario, and Fort Wayne, Ind., to run shifts building Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups. Those plants have been shut down since Feb. 29 and will reopen in the next couple of weeks... Full article...
