When ants need to cross some dangerous span in order to get to the thing they want, certain ants in the colony will sacrifice themselves to build a bridge that other ants can cross. That's how you get the honey. In GM's case, the honey is a $12 billion government lifeline. The dangerous span is, well, extinction. And the sacrificial ants in this case could be Pontiac, Saturn, and Saab. Before the government would start writing checks to the automakers, at least, Congress told GM and Ford and Chrysler to... GM mum on report it might drop 3 brands | The Detroit News | detnews.com
A GM spokesman declined to comment on a report Wednesday that the automaker was considering whether to eliminate its Pontiac, Saab and Saturn brands as a way to cut costs and improve its chances of getting as much as $12 billion in emergency federal aid. The Bloomberg report, quoting anonymous sources, said selling or dropping brands could help GM save cash and avoid running out of money, which the automaker has said it is in danger of doing early next year. Crossing over to Chevrolet: All-new Traverse joins GM's growing crossover family | The Detroit News | detnews.com
The hardest reviews to write are the ones in which a vehicle doesn't connect with me. Love one or hate one and the words flow like the Detroit River in the spring. Passionate cars create passionate critics. But the 2009 Chevrolet Traverse is one of those vehicles that never tugged on my heart or ignited that certain . I wanted to feel the man-machine connection, but after a week of testing the Traverse, I can honestly say that I may love it, but I'm not with it. It's not the Traverse's fault, it's mine... Consumers cautious about effect of auto bankruptcy | The Detroit News | detnews.com
NEW YORK -- Cash-strapped General Motors insists declaring bankruptcy would be disastrous because it would scare away customers. It's unlikely Chevrolet and Cadillac owners would be left with worthless warranties and no replacement parts, but the headlines about the Detroit Three's dire situation may already be keeping buyers away. "If GM is under the imminent threat of bankruptcy or actually declares bankruptcy, I would not consider a GM product," said Kevin Ketels, who might replace his family's 2004... Full article...

2009 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited wagon: Self-assured agility | The Detroit News | detnews.com
CORNWALL, N.Y . -- Schunemunk Mountain looms high in the autumn sky in bright orange, red and yellow. It is a splendid sight, well worth the 300-mile trip here from my home in Virginia, where similar natural beauty abounds. Staying home was an option. But I enjoy driving. Coming here to a daughter's home in the shadow of the Schunemunk was reason enough to hit the road. The 2009 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited wagon available for the drive was an added attraction. The new Outback is much changed from the... Full article...
