Buying an old VW an excuse for adventure | detnews.com | The Detroit News
Dear Tom and Ray: I just turned 40, ughhhh, so I guess I have hit my "midlife crisis." Unlike my friends, I don't want a Porsche or a Ferrari. I want a late-'50s to early-'60s VW Bug. That's right, a VW Bug. I live in Kentucky, and you are more likely to find a vintage Camaro or Mustang than an old VW that still has a floor. I have, however, found several for sale at very reasonable prices in the Southern California area. Herein lies my question, oh esteemed wrench heads. Would I be crazy to fly to Los... Cleaner engines fuel the future | detnews.com | The Detroit News
I sincerely hope you walked the aisles of the just-ended Detroit auto show. Amid these gloomy times, the Detroit Auto Dealers Association put on a solid event that demonstrated, among other things, that Detroit may be down, but we're a long way from being out. There were cars and trucks on display that anybody would be proud to drive -- from the Chevy Camaro pony car to the super-efficient Ford Fusion Hybrid. A major trend of the show was the greening of our cars and trucks, and technology is taking the... Full article...

The engineers of Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart, have developed a new sports exhaust system for the latest generation of the 911, available as an option on new models as of February 2009. This special exhaust gives the customer the opportunity to adjust the 911 to his individual, personal preferences also in the car’s particular sound: At the touch of a button the exhaust system switches over to a sporting and emotional sound generated in particular whenever the driver prefers a truly... Downturn means it's back to the basics | detnews.com | The Detroit News
We were spoiled too long. Minivans that leapfrogged the competition. Outrageously powerful Cadillac concepts as lavish as a rock opera. Luxury sport sedans that came to life as living art on the walls. Most of what you see on the Cobo Center floor at the North American International Auto Show this week was designed and engineered -- "locked in," as they say -- well before the current meltdown in industry sales. Will 2010 be even thinner? But if the show seems a little thin and aired out -- no Porsche... Full article...

Porsche makes required bid for Sweden's Scania | detnews.com | The Detroit News
BERLIN -- Porsche SE has made a mandatory takeover offer for Sweden's Scania. Monday's move is required by law after Porsche took indirect control of the truckmaker earlier this month. But it is making clear it is only going through the motions and has no "strategic interest." Porsche said earlier this month that Swedish law required it to make an offer for Scania after it upped its holding in Volkswagen AG to more than 50 percent. That gave it indirect control of the truckmaker. Volkswagen controls... Full article...

German car exports down 22 percent in December | detnews.com | The Detroit News
BERLIN -- German automakers exported 22 percent fewer cars in December than a year earlier, with production down by the same amount, the country's main industry group said Tuesday.
