AAA survey says fuel mileage paramount in consumers minds
In a sign that the high cost of gasoline has finally struck a central nerve, car shoppers today are reportedly more concerned about fuel economy than they are about the brand of vehicle when shopping for a new car. In addition, consumers want more government control over fuel economy. This startling news, and a reversal of consumer trends two years ago, is the result of a new AAA survey which studied consumers' attitudes towards fuel prices. It appears that consumers were getting used to the cyclic... Full article...

Chrysler needs only half of its SUVs
Now that Chrysler is in private hands the tough decisions are coming hard and fast. Last year we saw officials axe cars like the PT Cruiser convertible, Pacifica, Crossfire and Dodge Magnum, and now there are reports that even more models will be dropped from the current lineup. Earlier this month Chrysler revealed its new ‘Project Genesis’ turnaround strategy with which it plans to drop overlapping models that share common platforms and compete in similar segments. The carmaker’s President, Jim... Full article...

Peugeot and Citroen consider SUV based on Concept-cX
French carmakers Peugeot and Citroen could be developing a second SUV model based around Mitsubishi running gear, just as they did with the current 4007 and C7 cars which are based on the Outlander midsize SUV. Mitsubishi is planning to launch its own compact SUV along the lines of last year’s Concept-cX and this is the vehicle that will likely spawn sister-versions for the French carmakers. Peugeot is also working on a new crossover model based on its 308 hatch but this car will be positioned as a... Full article...

Mileage at top of car buying list
With the price of a fill-up hovering at record highs, gas mileage has become the number one consideration for American consumers in choosing a new vehicle, even topping which automaker produces the car or truck. That finding is the result of a AAA survey, which studied consumers' attitudes toward fuel prices. The survey, released this week, also suggests that car shoppers continue to want tougher government regulations on fuel efficiency. Sixty-one percent of those interviewed said lawmakers should... Low dollar forces Audi to cancel U.S. Q7 hybrid plans
The low U.S. dollar has caused a number of carmakers to readjust their strategies, including canceling models and moving production. The latest vehicle to fall victim to the falling dollar is Audi’s upcoming Q7 hybrid, which will no longer be offered in the U.S. The green SUV was originally meant to reach the U.S. early next year but its launch in the world’s biggest car market has been ruled out indefinitely because there was no business case for it given the state of the dollar. The information... Full article...

Infiniti announces the FX35... still not the FX37
Click above for high-res gallery of the 2009 Infiniti FXIt is official. The all-new 2009 FX50 will not share the showroom floor with a rumored "FX37." Instead, Infiniti has chosen to keep the less-powerful sibling designated as the "FX35." That means the engine is the award-winning VQ35HR right out of the Infiniti G35 sedan -- not the sweet 3.7-liter 330-hp gem from the G37 Coupe. Under the hood of the FX, the slightly smaller six-cylinder is rated at 303 hp down just a few horses from the sedan's... Full article...

Smaller firms hurt by strike at Axle
Scores of small privately owned suppliers are falling victim to the American Axle strike as it nears a fifth week. Many are the very companies that had the foresight in the early 1990s to grab a share of the lucrative truck building business and then became the envy of their competitors by getting a bite of building General Motors Corp.'s hot-selling big trucks and SUVs. But now those same businesses are hurting the most, facing anything from weak first-quarter results to layoffs to the threat of... Full article...

Scion planning to double lineup
After a bright start six years ago Scion’s sales have tanked and unless action is taken things are set to get worse. The Toyota budget brand sold just 130,000 cars last year, down 25% on the previous year, and officials are predicting volumes to remain unchanged this year. Most of the blame has been directed towards Scion’s limited lineup, although a weak car market was also a factor in the equation. Scion has developed a new turnaround plan, which involves adding a host of new models and several... Full article...

Chrysler expects to be profitable within 3 years
With Chrysler’s new owners Cerberus Capital Management making the hard and fast decisions, the carmaker is now on track to return to profitability. Even with the worsening U.S. economy and fluctuating exchange rates and commodity prices, CEO Bob Nardelli is confident Chrysler will be profitable within the next couple of years despite predictions the market will remain sour. Analysts expect U.S. auto sales to fall to 15.5 million cars this year, down from 16.1 million last year, but despite his... Full article...

Majority of Londoners support £25 emissions charge
In the latest round of the battle between London Mayor Ken Livingstone and Porsche over the UK capital’s new congestion charge, a survey has found that most of the city’s residents are in favor of the scheme. According to the results, 61% of Londoners support the updated scheme, which charges owners of high-emissions vehicles £25 $51 for driving through certain parts of the city. The survey, which polled 1,041 residents from the age of 16 onwards, also revealed that close to 70% think the charges... Full article...
