Pontiac Solstice and Saturn Sky
General Motors' acting CEO Fritz Henderson has said the Wilmington, DE plant that currently produces the Pontiac Solstice and Saturn Sky could be sold if a buyer was interested in producing the two roadsters. "If someone were to approach [us] with a proposal that made good sense for our people, we'd be open to it," Henderson told Autoweek. The move would ape Chrysler's plan for the Dodge Viper's production facilities, allowing another automaker to take control and continue building the niche... Full article...

Survival of the fittest trumps everything at Geneva this year | detnews.com | The Detroit News
GENEVA, Switzerland - You can forget the environment, electric cars, fuel cells, hybrids which plug in and those that don't; the theme at the annual Geneva Car Show this year will be survival of the fittest. The European industry faces the worst downturn in living memory, as consumers put off buying cars, worried sick about job security. As they prune their budgets and brace for stormy economic weather, the last thing people are about to do is buy a new car. The current wheels will surely last another... Full article...

Chrysler LLC will put up to 150 employees of its Kenosha, Wis., engine plant on indefinite layoff starting March 23. The move is in response to languishing auto sales, said Chrysler spokeswoman Shawn Morgan. To avoid closing the plant completely the company will reduce the speed of the two assembly lines, a move that requires fewer workers, Morgan said. The plant employs about 800 workers, including about 630 members of the United Auto Workers union. The moves do not affect Chrysler's plans to introduce... Full article...

BERLIN -- The supervisory board of General Motors Corp.'s Opel unit was meeting Friday to hear suggestions from management on how the auto maker can weather the economic crisis and its parent's troubles. Commentary: General Motors choking as global economy gasps | detnews.com | The Detroit News
The world may not be enough to keep General Motors Corp. afloat. As the ailing automaker gutted through a years-long North American restructuring that morphed last fall into pleas for a $30 billion lifeline from the feds, GM's revenue and, especially, profits from China, Latin America and robust growth in Eastern Europe partially offset massive losses back home. Not anymore. The foreign strands of GM's safety net, according to its year-end financials Thursday, are fraying quickly, too. Fourth-quarter... Full article...

Hurst resurrects specialty cars | detnews.com | The Detroit News
If you are of a certain age, you have fond memories of the Hurst/Olds, the Hemi Under Glass, perhaps even the Hurst/SC/Rambler. Hurst, founded in 1958 by East Coast hot rodder George Hurst, became popular among automotive enthusiasts because of its Hurst shifter, a sleek looking, high-performance curved gearshift lever. Hurst promoted its aftermarket equipment by building specialty cars such as the Hemi Under Glass, a 1965 Plymouth Barracuda drag racer. In 1968, Hurst expanded the program with... Full article...

Sneak peek: Next-generation Opel/Saturn Astra | detnews.com | The Detroit News
The new profile -- the front fascia and the massive rear bumper with the parted taillights -- are visible on the next-generation Opel/Saturn Astra. The new car looks somewhat sleeker and yet more elegant. The Astra also seems to have very interesting headlight clusters with a jeweled arrangement at the top of the housing. Besides the 5-door model pictured here, Opel has an estate "Caravan"; a convertible "Twin Top"; and the 3-door "GTC" in the pipeline, all following the 5-doors introduction, one by...
