Chrysler to idle all plants | detnews.com | The Detroit News
Chrysler LLC is shutting its North American production operations Friday for a month, the latest in a string of drastic cost-cutting measures it is making as it awaits word on emergency federal loans to prevent it from possibly having to file for bankruptcy. The Auburn Hills automaker said the action is a response to a severe sales slump, tight credit and an urgent need to preserve cash. All 30 of the company's assembly, engine and transmission plants in the United States, Canada and Mexico will close... Full article...

Honda slashes profit goals | detnews.com | The Detroit News
Honda Motor Co. provided stark evidence of the damage the global downturn is doing to Japan's auto industry when it said Wednesday that it expected to lose money during the second half of its fiscal year. "Every day, the hardships we face are getting worse and worse. And there are no signs of recovery," Honda CEO Takeo Fukui said at the company's traditional year-end news conference in Tokyo. Honda, Japan's second-largest automaker after Toyota Motor Corp., still expects to show a profit for the fiscal... Full article...

First Drive: 2009 Porsche Cayman S
Pity the poor Porsche 911. Wounded by challenges from brands as diverse as Aston Martin and Nissan it now faces the sternest test of all: that from its own flesh and blood. Richard Meaden drives the revamped Cayman S.Conspiracy theories, don’t you just love ‘em? You know, like the one about Porsche deliberately hobbling the Cayman by not fitting it with a limited-slip differential, just to protect the 911 from getting a kicking.Trouble is, it would have been much easier to laugh at the... GM to balance austerity, buzz at auto show | detnews.com | The Detroit News
General Motors Corp. will be walking a fine line at the 2009 North American International Auto Show next month. For most of its first 100 years, the company was a marketing pioneer with lavish budgets -- wooing the public with elaborate exhibitions such as the Motorama, a traveling exhibition popularized in the 1950s, and spending willfully on endorsement deals with Tiger Woods, Dinah Shore and other celebrities. But on the brink of financial collapse, pending a request for billions of dollars in... Full article...

MotiveMagazine Nissan 370z VS. Porsche Cayman S
You didn't used to be like this, Nissan. Up until the GT-R arrived this year, and with the exception of the 370Z's predecessor, you've spent the last decade building modest SUVs, trucks, and sedans for the masses. Sure, there have been a few hot compacts in there, but your latest Sentra SE-Rs haven't exactly set the enthusiast world ablaze. Now it's all Porsche this, Nürburgring that. It's like we don't even know you anymore. Then, just when it seems like GT-R-a-palooza is dying down, here comes the... Full article...

Stars of the road: Mazda6, F-150 rise to the top in value, performance | detnews.com | The Detroit News
Need trumps want in 2008 for The Detroit News Car and Truck of the Year. There are lots of vehicles I want: the $100,000 Corvette ZR1 super-duper car; the Nissan GT-R, with its fancy carbon-fiber everything; or even the Cadillac Escalade Hybrid, a silky smooth big ute that glides along the road in semi-environmental friendliness. But few need those vehicles, much as it pains me even to write those words. This year, many people have lost the value of a ZR1 in their 401k since August. And all 18 people... Full article...

Honda slashes profit forecast amid global downturn | detnews.com | The Detroit News
TOKYO -- Japanese automaker Honda slashed its profit forecast for the fiscal year and said managers will take a 10 percent pay cut amid a global downturn in the auto industry. President Takeo Fukui blamed the lower earnings forecast on declining demand set off by the U.S. financial crisis and the nose-diving dollar, which recently fell to a 13-year low against the yen. Japan's second-biggest automaker now expects 185 billion yen $2.06 billion in group net profit for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2009... Full article...
