MX-5 Miata owns the entry-level sports car market | detnews.com | The Detroit News
For two decades, despite challenges here and there, Mazda's MX-5 Miata has owned the popular-priced sports car market. It was a sensation when it appeared in 1990 as the embodiment of the traditional open two-seater, dominated for generations by roadsters and convertibles from Great Britain. They included the Austin-Healey Sprite, 100 and 3000; Lotus Elan; MG TC, TD, A, B and Midget; Triumph TR and Spitfire, and Sunbeam Alpine and Tiger. All offered top-down exhilaration with a low center of gravity and... Full article...

Nissan rolls out electric car | detnews.com | The Detroit News
YOKOHAMA, Japan -- Nissan Chief Executive Carlos Ghosn made a quiet entrance Sunday at the Japanese automaker's new headquarters building -- driving the company's zero-emission vehicle on stage for its inaugural public viewing. Nissan Motor Co.'s environmentally friendly automobile -- a blue hatchback with a sporty design and a recharging opening in the front -- is set to go on sale in Japan, the U.S. and Europe next year. Designer Shiro Nakamura said the vehicle was intentionally designed to avoid a... Full article...

Subaru WRX STI
Caught for the first time on the Nürburgring test track in Germany, the 2009 Subaru WRX STI looks as though it has enough upgrades to quiet the uproar over the standard model's tepid styling. Although the prototype in question still had some camouflage over the front and rear fascias, there are notable changes in store for the next-generation WRX STI. If it's the chrome-trimmed nose of the WRX that offends you, then you'll be happy to know that the STI should arrive with a more stylish snout... Full article...

Auto briefs | detnews.com | The Detroit News
The head of the California New Car Dealers Association on Tuesday asked the Treasury Department to provide immediate financial assistance, warning that thousands of dealers nationwide could close their doors this year. In 2008, nearly 10 percent of car dealers in California closed their doors, including 137 of the roughly 1,400 new car dealers. That pace has increased this year, with 23 additional Golden State dealers closing in the first seven weeks of 2009, said Peter Welch, head of the California... Full article...

A new social compact: Honda Civic best all-around choice in '09 lineup | detnews.com | The Detroit News
There's no doubting the variety that comes with compact cars. Some, such as the Volvo C30 and Audi A3, are more luxurious, while others, like the Mini Cooper, have cult-like followings. All of them, however, share a few common attributes. In auto parlance, they are known as C-Segment vehicles, something that falls between the B and D segments. The EPA defines them as vehicles with interior volumes measuring between 100 and 109.9 cubic feet, but most people wouldn't know a cubic foot from a... Full article...

Wealthy put car buys on the shelf or trade down | detnews.com | The Detroit News
NAPLES, Fla. -- If you win $10 million in the lottery, the local joke goes, you still won't qualify to be among the wealthiest 10,000 households here. But even the rolling elite of Naples' exclusive Port Royal, Grey Oaks and Pelican Marsh enclaves are feeling a little thriftier in these uncertain times. The real estate crash, followed by a glut of multimillion-dollar homes and condos for sale, and now Madoff jitters and Wall Street's meltdown have cast a rare chill over the pockets and purses of the... Mitsubishi Leaves Dakar Rally
Shocking news from Japan: all the work of Mitsubishi Motorsports is stopped, so there will be no more rallying, no more Dakar prizes. The automaker has taken part in Dakar rally 26 times, 12 of which were won. The Japanese manufacturer got so good in sport that it kept coming first seven times in a row. But those days are in the past because the company is cutting corners as well as many other firms and sport suffers first as an unnecessary luxury. Mitsubishi claims its good results in rallies for the... Full article...

Foreigners seek access to untapped lithium | detnews.com | The Detroit News
UYUNI, Bolivia -- In the rush to build the next generation of hybrid or electric cars, a sobering fact confronts automakers and governments seeking to lower their reliance on foreign oil: Almost half of the world's lithium, the mineral needed to power the vehicles, is found in Bolivia -- a country that may not be willing to surrender it easily. Japanese and European companies are busily trying to strike deals to tap the resource, but a nationalist sentiment about the lithium is building quickly in the... Full article...

2009 Kia Cerato First Steer
Kia has a bit of a penchant for spelling words with a ‘K’ , for possibly obvious reasons, so I’m going to make a suggestion to it here, consider adding ‘Konservative’ to the lexicon – at least where it relates to the estimate that it will sell just 3000 of the all-new Cerato small sedan in Australia this year. While on the one hand the company has been talking up the new Cerato as a contender against the major players in the small car segment here, that’s Toyota... Downturn means it's back to the basics | detnews.com | The Detroit News
We were spoiled too long. Minivans that leapfrogged the competition. Outrageously powerful Cadillac concepts as lavish as a rock opera. Luxury sport sedans that came to life as living art on the walls. Most of what you see on the Cobo Center floor at the North American International Auto Show this week was designed and engineered -- "locked in," as they say -- well before the current meltdown in industry sales. Will 2010 be even thinner? But if the show seems a little thin and aired out -- no Porsche... Full article...
