Update: Rusting Mazdas to be scrapped
Update: Almost two years after the Cougar Ace carrier tipped over off the coast of Alaska, damaging 4,703 brand new Mazdas, management have finally decided to scrap all the cars. The Associated Press reports that officials were planning to salvage as many vehicles as they could but rust caused by the salty sea air made the cars unsellable. Original: You may remember a report that a cargo ship carrying almost five thousand US and Canada bound Mazdas on board had keeled over. Now Mazda has announced that... Full article...

Peugeot and Citroen consider SUV based on Concept-cX
French carmakers Peugeot and Citroen could be developing a second SUV model based around Mitsubishi running gear, just as they did with the current 4007 and C7 cars which are based on the Outlander midsize SUV. Mitsubishi is planning to launch its own compact SUV along the lines of last year’s Concept-cX and this is the vehicle that will likely spawn sister-versions for the French carmakers. Peugeot is also working on a new crossover model based on its 308 hatch but this car will be positioned as a... Full article...

Farley may replace Ford's Mulally
Ford Motor Co.'s new chief marketing officer, Jim Farley, and the president of its Americas group, Mark Fields, are both on the short list of executives identified by the company to succeed CEO Alan Mulally. But Ford stressed any talk of Mulally's leaving is "premature." Joe Laymon, Ford's human resources chief, made public the names on his succession list for Mulally during an interview with Automotive News that was published Monday. Ford confirmed the details of that report, but said such planning is... Full article...

Porsche may use VW stake to avoid emissions rules
Porsche has a major challenge on its hands in the form of strict new fuel-economy and emissions regulations set to roll in across the U.S. and Europe in coming years. Carmakers are being forced to improve their average fleet-wide mileage and carbon emissions levels and for a niche brand like Porsche, which sells a limited range of high-performance models, meeting these new standards will be near impossible given the current deadlines. To get around the new regulations, Porsche may be able to merge its... Full article...

Virtually stress-free assembly line: Ford lab examines worker strain during a vehicle's design stage
In a dimly lit room in Dearborn, a Ford Motor Co. employee carefully places the center console into a partially assembled Fusion sedan and struggles to line it up with other components. Or so it seems to him. Everyone else in the room sees a man wearing an elaborate headpiece and a harness studded with reflective balls moving inside a metal rig that vaguely resembles the outline of a car. Infrared cameras track his movements and feed the images into a powerful computer system. The computer monitors the... Full article...

Porsche may avoid CAFE penalty by buddying up with VW
Porsche's forthcoming majority stake in Volkswagen has the potential to remove a CAFE-sized thorn from the automaker's side. After a failed bid in Congress to create an exemption for itself from the recently revised fuel economy standards, Porsche needed a way to increase its CAFE rating in the U.S. This might be achieved by combining Porsche and VW's emissions and fuel-economy numbers into one lump sum, thus preserving the automaker's performance heritage. While this certainly isn't anything new &ndash... Sporty, flexible Mazda CX-9 will suit many needs
Sport utility vehicles haven't died. They've just crossed over. With high pump prices putting full-size trucks in peril, automakers are shifting to crossovers that bear the bodies of SUVs on the platforms of popular sedans. The crossover formula delivers excellent ride and handling, better fuel economy than you typically find in an SUV and the option of front or all-wheel-drive. Some call the crossover simply the modern station wagon. And the pricing is extremely competitive, running generally from the... Full article...

Upcoming Pontiac Ute gets five stars in Australian crash test
For those of you interested in picking up one of the new Pontiac G8 ST utes when they come to the US next year there's good news. In a recent round of ute/pickup crash testing in Australia, the Holden Commodore Ute beat all comers to score five stars. No competitor matched the lofty score.
