Ford to slash up to 12% of salaried jobs
Ford Motor Co. will cut its U.S. salaried work force by between 10 percent and 12 percent in an effort to jump-start a turnaround plan stalling in the face of rising gasoline and raw materials prices. And this time, it won't be voluntary. That was the sobering message delivered to senior employees in Ford's sales, marketing and service division during a "town hall" meeting with Vice President Jim Farley on Friday morning. He told his team that Ford is struggling to cope with "a structural change to our... Full article...

Ford plans to debut small, light pickups
Ford Motor Co. is planning a major revamping of its truck lineup in the United States in response to rising fuel prices and a consumer shift toward more fuel-efficient vehicles. The Dearborn automaker is developing a smaller, lighter version of its bread-and-butter F-150 pickup. The company also is designing a new global compact pickup in Australia that it plans to manufacture in South Africa and Thailand that could be imported to the United States. Ford would not comment on either program, but sources... Full article...

FIRST-HAND LOOK AT FORD'S ECO-BOOST TECHNOLOGYI just spent a day at Ford's proving grounds driving a number of vehicles that use Eco-boost technology, which is the centerpiece of the company's strategy to improve fuel economy. I wish I could tell you more about my driving impressions of these Fords, but all that information is embargoed for now. What I can say is that the Eco-boost technology works impressively well. However, while the technology works well, I wonder how well Ford's strategy will work... Full article...

Jerry York: Ford should sell Volvo and Mercury
The former CFO of Chrysler and chief aide to Kirk Kerkorian and his Tracinda investment company, Jerry York, has given some insight about his thoughts on the current state of Ford and its subsidiaries. York, who met with Ford CEO Alan Mulally last month, thinks the Blue Oval chief will sell Volvo and Mercury but will likely retain Lincoln. He said cutting Volvo and Mercury from Ford’s lineup is the right thing to do and that’s what he would do if he had the top job. “I’m very confident... Full article...

Analysts: Mich. least likely to get VW plant
WASHINGTON -- Tennessee and Alabama should be favored over Michigan to land a new Volkswagen assembly plant, analysts said Thursday, based on the auto industry's ongoing migration into the Sun Belt and concerns about labor's heavy influence in Michigan. Volkswagen has confirmed that it is considering the three states for a plant, offering a crown jewel of economic development that could help the states expand their auto industry presence. Track revs up thrills for novice drag races
It was back in 1973, so I can't exactly recall why my older brother was taking his '71 Dodge Charger R/T to the drag strip. It may have been to dial in the new Six Pack carburetor setup he installed on the car's thumping 440 Magnum, or he could have been testing a then high-tech Direct Connection transistorized ignition. Regardless of the reason, he took me. I was 11. While details of my first trip to a drag strip are fuzzy, one memory remains razor sharp: the roar of uncorked exhaust pipes. It was more...
