Presidential limos evolve into heavily fortified machines | detnews.com | The Detroit News
During his recent inauguration, President Barack Obama traveled to the steps of the Capitol to take the oath of office in a limousine dubbed "the Beast." All who saw this Cadillac tank on wheels built by General Motors Corp. had to be impressed. While the people at GM who built this monster are understandably mum about the specifics of its features -- for security reasons very few people were privy to the development of its design -- we do know some of the basics of the car engineered to get the new... TOKYO -- Honda Motor Co. said today it is cutting production in Japan and North America by an additional 50,000 vehicles amid a severe slump in global sales. Japan's No. 2 automaker said output in North America will fall by 29,000 units, affecting Honda's three plants in the region -- Ontario, Canada; Marysville/East Liberty, Ohio; and Lincoln, Ala. Due to the production cuts, Honda's overall output in North America will drop 12 percent to 1.26 million units in the fiscal year ending March 31. The... Full article...

'57 Heaven museum (rest in) peace | detnews.com | The Detroit News
BRANSON, Mo . -- It's 1957: The sky over Flint, Mich., glows at night from the spark-showering assembly lines. At Ford's River Rouge Complex in Dearborn, the hammering goes on day and night. Corvettes get fuel injection. Chryslers get tinsel-bright tail fins big enough for Sputnik to see. The Detroit Lions win the NFL championship. Motor City is firing on all cylinders. That was then, and this is now, and now -- as most everyone knows -- is the most desperate moment in the history of American... Full article...

DETROIT -- The North American International Auto Show still manages to shock. And it doesn't matter whether you're looking for the best or the worst vehicles on the show floor. The biggest showstopper is the Cadillac Converj -- spelling aside, this concept car was hands down the best in show. It's the kind of car you want to go back and check out again. And you should. How coneys can solve energy crisis | detnews.com | The Detroit News
Hey, Motor City! We are -- literally -- sitting on the answer to America's energy woes. This realization came to Biz Insider as we awaited the new rankings from Men's Fitness for the "fattest cities" in America. Detroit managed to stay in the Top 20 last year at No. 13 thanks to all the coney islands, pizza joints and candy shops in Michigan, though that was down from No. 9 in 2007. But how, you wonder, with all the gluttony and sloth in Motown, can our flabby selves solve the energy crisis? After all... Full article...

Cheney: Congress failed struggling automakers | detnews.com | The Detroit News
WASHINGTON -- Vice President Dick Cheney blamed Congress for failing to bail out the auto industry, saying the White House was forced to step in to save U.S. car companies. In an interview broadcast Sunday, Cheney said the economy is in such bad shape that the car companies might not have survived without the $17.4 billion in emergency loans that President George W. Bush approved on Friday. "The president decided specifically that he wanted to try to deal with it and not preside over the collapse of the... Full article...
