Scion planning to double lineup
After a bright start six years ago Scion’s sales have tanked and unless action is taken things are set to get worse. The Toyota budget brand sold just 130,000 cars last year, down 25% on the previous year, and officials are predicting volumes to remain unchanged this year. Most of the blame has been directed towards Scion’s limited lineup, although a weak car market was also a factor in the equation. Scion has developed a new turnaround plan, which involves adding a host of new models and several... Full article...

Lexus brand isn't flying in Toyota's home market
In trying to establish a Japanese-market foothold for Lexus, Toyota has seemingly fallen prey to the same tactic that made the Cadillac Cimmaron such a maroon. When trying to launch a brand, especially an upscale brand, it's not advisable to rebadge existing models and crank up the price. It doesn't seem to matter how good the car is, or how swanky the new $10-million-a-pop showroom is, once an Altezza, always an Altezza, and paying 20 percent more for the same car with a different logo is rightfully... Rare time a Bentley will not stick out
Dear Tom and Ray: I am an older woman who has just taken a vice presidential position with a company that is virtually all male and, thus, I do not want to display my profound ignorance about cars. The company has said that it will provide me with a car to use, BUT it must be one that reflects the company's success and status. Translated, that means I have to choose something fancier than the 2000 Lexus I currently drive. I am, frankly, looking for comfort. I like leather seats, and I want roadside... Full article...

Spy Video: Alfa Romeo 159 GTA mule spotted at the Nurburgring
Click above to watch the spy video of the Alfa 159 GTA Alfa Romeo has been turning out some impossibly beautiful cars. Unfortunately, most of the line-up is lacking the grunt to back up its killer looks, with the 8C Competizione floating beyond reproach atop the range and a huge gap down to the standard production models. Alfa is apparently looking to bridge that gap, however, with the 159 GTA.In the video after the jump, you'll see footage of a 159 decked out with enormous AMG Black Series-style vents... Sporty, flexible Mazda CX-9 will suit many needs
Sport utility vehicles haven't died. They've just crossed over. With high pump prices putting full-size trucks in peril, automakers are shifting to crossovers that bear the bodies of SUVs on the platforms of popular sedans. The crossover formula delivers excellent ride and handling, better fuel economy than you typically find in an SUV and the option of front or all-wheel-drive. Some call the crossover simply the modern station wagon. And the pricing is extremely competitive, running generally from the... Full article...

Hyundai Genesis not going to Europe
The Genesis luxury sedan launched in January at the Detroit Auto Show is something the Europeans will not enjoy. The Korean carmaker says the failure of Toyota’s Lexus premium brand to sell cars in high numbers in Europe is one reason for the decision. "We looked at Lexus’ track record in Europe," said Hyundai spokesman Oles Gadacz.Last year, Lexus sold 40,636 cars in Europe and Turkey, according to JATO Dynamics. Gadacz said EU plans for tougher CO2 emission limits were another factor... Full article...

Detroit Big Three and Toyota post double-digit March sales drops
Detroit's Big Three automakers and Toyota all posted double-digit U.S. sales declines in March, mostly on sliding demand for trucks and sport utility vehicles. General Motors Corp. said it delivered 282,732 vehicles in the month, down 19.1 percent from 349,866 a year ago. Hardest-hit were full-sized trucks, offset by demand for smaller sedans, crossovers and the popular Cadillac CTS. Chrysler LLC sold 166,386 units in March, down 19.4 percent from 206,435 in 2006. The Chrysler Sebring, Jeep Compass and... Full article...

By the Numbers: March 2008
Though many news outlets will decry March as a horrible sales month in the auto industry, it wasn't that bad and there are some notable successes. The reason it isn't as bad as some will tell you is because most outlets compare the volume of cars sold last month to the same month in 2007, rather than comparing the average number of cars sold per day. Since there were two extra selling days last year 28 vs. 26, looking at the raw numbers is very misleading. All of our numbers below represent the change... Full article...
