Auto briefs
NEW YORK -- Toyota Motor Corp. has cut its forecast for the U.S. auto market this year and now expects overall industry sales of around 15.5 million cars and trucks, according to Toyota executives at the New York car show. That range "is looking to be a more reasonable and realistic view," Randy Pflughaupt, vice president for marketing at Toyota Motor Sales USA, said at the auto show. At the start of the year, the Japanese automaker had predicted the market would be flat in 2008, with sales totaling... Full article...

Workers at Axle in crossfire as era ends
You may not want to listen to Dakar McDonald. You may not be sympathetic to his predicament. But the guy tells a story that's worth hearing because of what it says about Detroit's reckoning. And an era's final gasps. He's 36. He's a husband, the father of an 8-year-old and a Southfield homeowner. He earns $28.75 an hour at American Axle & Manufacturing Holdings Inc.'s Plant 2, which he says works out to an annual salary of roughly $57,000. He's also on strike -- going on one month. McDonald, like the... Full article...

GM workers face hard sell on buyouts
General Motors Corp. next week will begin enticing thousands of veteran workers to leave the company for good by dangling the promise of a fresh start and maybe even a new car. The automaker, which badly needs to trim its ranks to help slash U.S. labor costs, says it won't coerce workers to take the buyout offers and retirement incentives going out to its hourly work force. But GM will try to put an upbeat spin on the daunting prospect of giving up the vaunted wages and benefits of a Big Three factory... Full article...

Ford officially takes over Romanian auto plant
BUCHAREST, Romania -- Ford Motor Co. formally took over the Romanian plant Automobile Craiova from the Romanian government today. Prime Minister Calin Popescu Tariceanu handed the factory's key to Ford of Europe President John Fleming, saying that Ford's investment of about $1 billion would allow Romania to become the biggest car producer in southeastern Europe. Last year, Ford bought a 72.4 percent stake in the state-owned company, paying about $88 million and vowing to invest $1 billion to upgrade and... Full article...

Son of Hyundai Motors chairman relinquishes CEO title at Kia
SEOUL, South Korea -- The son of the chairman of Hyundai Motor Co. stepped aside Friday from his role as chief executive at the company's Kia affiliate, an official said. Chung Euisun, 37, son of Hyundai Motor Chairman Chung Mong-koo, will keep his title as Kia Motors Corp. president and remain focused on overseas business and planning, said Kia spokesman Michael Choo. The change followed a shareholder meeting earlier Friday, but Choo said the company had no further comment. The younger Chung had been... Full article...

Mini to the max: Clubman is bigger, and even better
It's my considered opinion that the BMW Mini Cooper is the most successful car design of the last 20 years. What can touch it? Here's a car that puts a spearmint thrill through you every time you turn the key, a larking, capering, glass-and-steel nymph that nicks past other traffic like it's mired in molasses. On top of the giddy charge of merely wheeling the thing, you've got this utterly charismatic styling, a po-mo masterpiece, a rolling tribute to the iconic Mini 1959 to 2000 designed by Alec... Smaller firms hurt by strike at Axle
Scores of small privately owned suppliers are falling victim to the American Axle strike as it nears a fifth week. Many are the very companies that had the foresight in the early 1990s to grab a share of the lucrative truck building business and then became the envy of their competitors by getting a bite of building General Motors Corp.'s hot-selling big trucks and SUVs. But now those same businesses are hurting the most, facing anything from weak first-quarter results to layoffs to the threat of... Full article...

Foley is parting with beloved Corvette
Attention, political and hot rod junkies: Now's your once-in-a-lifetime chance to own a little red Corvette once driven by the speaker of the House of Representatives. That's right, former Speaker Tom Foley's 2001 shiny Corvette convertible is up for sale. Much to the Washington Democrat's chagrin. Foley, 79, now largely retired as a lobbyist with Akin Gump, is no longer driving. But it sounds as though he'll always have a soft spot for the car. "He loves that red Corvette," says Foley's wife, Heather... Full article...

Classic 'Vette, modern guts
The 1963 Chevrolet Corvette had dramatic styling, living up to its Sting Ray badge with a design that included gill-styled side sculpting, sharp creases, hidden headlamps and that famous split rear window on the first Corvette coupe. Still, there are those who are nostalgic for the original 'Vette, which for the last few years of its production was characterized by deep, tapered "coves" that flowed from just behind the front wheels back into the door panels. But as often is the case, nostalgia can blur... Full article...

Sneak peek: Porsche Cayenne Hybrid
The hybrid version of Porsche's Cayenne will likely be powered by a 3.6-liter V6. Its hybrid power plant is expected to offer at least a 15% fuel savings -- possibly up to 25 or 30 percent depending on applications -- compared to a non-hybrid V6. First shown in concept guise in LA and announced as a 2009 model, speculation has the Cayenne down for the 2010 model year. [source] Full article...
