BMW & Mercedes in EV talks with Magna
One of the weirdest concepts from the recent Geneva Motor Show wasn’t from a major a carmaker but from independent manufacturer Magna-Steyr. The concept was the Mila Alpin hybrid and it served as a platform to showcase a number of different technologies all in the one vehicle. Features displayed on the Alpin include a new modular design that’s said to make construction cheaper and more efficient, a compact 4WD system capable of climbing terrain at 45 degrees and a mid-engine layout with a hybrid... Frank Washington Charity Auction begins: bid now, bid often
We meet more and more automotive journalists in the industry with every auto show we attend, and we've noticed a definite sense of brotherhood that exists among all who get to do this insanely sweet job for a living. We appreciate those veterans who've been kind enough to befriend a little blog like ours, and we try to repay the favor when we can. Frank Washington is not an automotive journalist we've met personally, but many of our new friends know him and were horrified to learn that he had been... Full article...

Ford Transit Connect
This year Ford presented Transit Connect, a cargo van which is shorter, taller and smaller than a usual van. It has been shown both in New-York and Chicago. For several years different American auto makers were thinking of a vehicle which could satisfy plumbers, caterers and other little business owners who have to carry a lot of stuff with them every day. Transit Connect is the idea with which Ford came up. It has low floor and is 6,8 feet tall. This will give an owner plenty of room to carry tools or... Full article...

Porsche 911: Ultimate car from the '80s?
Growing up as a child in the '80s had its ups and its downs. Sure, every generation looks back at its past-self and wonders-out-loud, "What were you thinking," from time to time. Still, our generation sure did have plenty of cool cars, and many of those were featured on television. A rare day went by when we didn't lust for Magnum P.I.'s Ferrari 308; sitting in the movie theater being mesmerized by Doc's De Lorean not that it's that great of a car, but it's iconic nonetheless from Back to the Future; or... Daihatsu teams up with Provision to create 3D holographic dash
Forget about light-emitting diode LED or liquid crystal display LCD dashboards. According to Daihatsu, the next hot ticket will be 3D holographic technology. Daihatsu teamed up with Provision Interactive Technologies to implement a 3D dashboard for their latest concept car which debuted at the 40th Tokyo Motor Show. Attendees were so impressed with the technology, that Provision raced to file a new patent for the product they call "HLXX." The HLXX technology utilizes a traditional 2D flat screen... Ford, Jag seldom worked at marriage
Was Bill Hayden right after all? Just months after Ford Motor Co. paid $2.5 billion in 1989 for Jaguar Cars Ltd., the former Ford of Europe exec became the luxury marque's chairman and committed a politically incorrect gaffe of Lutzian proportions. Hayden observed that Jag's antiquated factories were the worst he'd seen anywhere -- with the possible exception of a car plant he once toured in Gorky, deep inside the Soviet Union. Candor like that doesn't win friends in the West Midlands or inside the... Full article...

Bentley, and luxury cars generally, face life or death struggle
One headline made me do a double-take at the annual Geneva Car Show early in March. "Geneva 2008: Bentley to go 120 G/km by 2012" Let me try and explain some of that gobbledygook. "G/km" is short for grammes of carbon dioxide CO2 per kilometre. That's European shorthand for how much a car apparently threatens the climate with its emissions of CO2. This formula is simply a more opaque way of expressing a more familiar measurement of miles per gallon. After quickly consulting my conversion table I can... Full article...

Auto briefs
General Motors Corp . on Thursday said a parts shortage created by the more-than-month-long strike at American Axle will force the automaker to idle its Detroit-Hamtramck assembly plant after today. The plant, which produces the Cadillac DTS and Buick Lucerne sedans, will be the first car-building factory shut down by the strike. Until now, only production of slow-selling full-size trucks and SUVs, and parts used to make them, have been affected by the stoppage. GM Spokesman Dan Flores said the sole... Full article...
