IIHS releases list of 2009 Top Safety Picks
Vehicles are getting safer according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, which published its list of 2009 Top Safety Picks today. A total of 72 vehicles earned Top Safety Pick honors this year, which means each one earned the highest score of Good in front, side and rear crash tests performed by the IIHS, as well as offers electronic stability control. SEOUL, South Korea -- The South Korean unit of General Motors Corp. said Tuesday it will extend a planned production shutdown due to weakening demand for autos overseas. Production at GM Daewoo Auto & Technology Co.'s No. 2 plant in the city of Bupyeong, near Seoul, will cease from Dec. 1 until Jan. 4, said Park Hae-ho, a company spokesman. NEW YORK -- The auto Web site Edmunds.com said it expects a slight improvement in November vehicle sales compared with last month partly due to record-high sales incentives, but volumes will still be sharply lower from a year ago. Edmunds estimates new-vehicle sales in November of 850,000 units, up 1.9 percent from October. The figure is down 27.6 percent from sales in November 2007.
