Click above for high-res gallery of the 2008 Porsche Cayenne GTS Porsche makes sports cars backed by a rich tradition and race history. The thought of something wearing the badge that's also able to cart around your family and a load of their assorted junk was once laughable. Today, of course, that thought manifests itself in the form of the Porsche Cayenne. Even now, the idea of the Porsche SUV still seems wrong. Sure, the red Cayenne GTS in the Autoblog Garage has a spec sheet that looks exciting on... Full article...

Consumers a reluctant bunch at auto show | The Detroit News | detnews.com
LOS ANGELES -- Small-business owner Greg Mohr was hopping in and out of cars at the Los Angeles Auto Show, but he isn't in the market to buy one. Neither are retirees Greg and Pinkie Stanley, or trucker Jorge Vidrio. "We're in the market if the prices were more accessible," said Vidrio, 35. "Everything's so overpriced, especially for the economy that we're in." The crowds at the show are a reluctant bunch this year. Anxious about the economy, the future of the Detroit Three automakers and the... Full article...

Politicians can't resist flying target | The Detroit News | detnews.com
One-liners were flying on Capitol Hill this week as the CEOs of Detroit's struggling Big Three automakers appeared before Congress to plead for federal help. Lawmakers could not resist poking the executives for their decision to fly to Washington in corporate jets to ask for a handout. The best line came from Rep. Gary Ackerman, D-N.Y.: "It's almost like seeing a guy show up at a soup kitchen in high hat and tuxedo," he said. "I mean, couldn't you all have downgraded to first class or jet-pooled?" Other... LA 2008: VW Race Touareg 2
Click above for high-res image gallery of the Race Touareg 2 This is Volkswagens entrant in this weekend's Baja 1000: a spaceframe-chassis Touareg TDI with 75 cm of suspension travel competing in the top-dog Trophy Truck class and utilizing an oil-burning V12 with nearly 550 hp. That's a long way from the first VW win in 1967 that came courtesy of a VW Beetle converted into one of the soon-to-be-ubiquitous dune monsters. Driver Mark Miller won the Baja 500 last year in the first Race Touareg. Aided by... Full article...

Click above for high-res gallery of thte 2009 HUMMER H3T Alpha The 2009 HUMMER H3T Alpha arrived in the Autobog Garage on Election Day, and so it was my transportation to and from the local polling station to exercise my civic duty. I had the HUMMER in my thoughts when I went to cast my ballot, and looking at the paper before me was like seeing the fate of General Motors reflected in this year's presidential election. Barack Obama was new, different and promised an uncharted path to better times, the... Full article...

Dealers try to hold on as Big 3 drama plays out | The Detroit News | detnews.com
General Motors Corp. dealer Bill Shotwell tried something new last month at the North Carolina State Fair. Just past the vendors selling deep-fried Snickers bars, wedged between the Kiddieland Fun Park and the livestock exhibit, he created a mini-showroom with a full line of Saturn models. The Raleigh dealer thought the novel approach might snag some customers. About 5,000 people an hour filed past the Sky sports car. "The common phrase from people was 'That's a Saturn?' " Shotwell said.He may... Full article...

Don't get in a lather about soap in radio | The Detroit News | detnews.com
Dear Tom and Ray: I did something that was, at best, careless -- and at worst, really, really stupid. When I turn on my 2006 Jeep Liberty, the vents emit a "not so nice" smell. So, I put a very pleasantly scented bar of homemade soap on top of the dashboard. I just placed it there, wrapped in the clear plastic it came in. It helped make the car smell better. Then, while parked in a big parking lot for the day I take the train to work, the soap melted in the hot sun. It leaked through the openings on the... Full article...
