2009 Geneva Auto Show: Lumma Design CLR X 650 GT
Auto shows exist not only for the manufacturers’ presentations, but for tuners as well. 2009 Geneva Auto Show will be hosting the debut of Lumma Design CLR X 650 GT next week. The German tuner has already worked on BMW X6 crossover last November, but after a few months some features were revised and modified. Just one look at the new vehicle makes great impression: the exterior is made in cookie-and-cream style: white body is trimmed with black stripes on the sides, carbon-fiber spoiler, black window... Only one U.S. vehicle makes Top 10 picks | detnews.com | The Detroit News
WASHINGTON -- Japanese automakers dominated Consumer Reports influential annual survey of the most reliable vehicles, with Toyota Motor Corp. nabbing five of the 2009 Top 10 Picks released Thursday. Japanese automakers held the top four overall spots in the magazine's survey, which is based on more than 50 tests of 80 different vehicles. The winners ranked high in road tests, reliability and safety requirements. American vehicles were pummeled in the magazine's April survey, which goes on sale Tuesday... Full article...

Ford cuts sales forecast, but won't seek aid | detnews.com | The Detroit News
Ford Motor Co. cut its U.S. auto sales forecast for 2009 by another million vehicles Thursday, but continued to insist it does not need federal assistance to survive. The Dearborn automaker now expects U.S. car and truck sales to fall as low as 10.5 million units, citing a deepening economic crisis and the government's failure to free up the nation's credit markets, according to a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission. Ford also said it would cut first-quarter production estimates for the... Full article...

Auto briefs | detnews.com | The Detroit News
The head of the California New Car Dealers Association on Tuesday asked the Treasury Department to provide immediate financial assistance, warning that thousands of dealers nationwide could close their doors this year. In 2008, nearly 10 percent of car dealers in California closed their doors, including 137 of the roughly 1,400 new car dealers. That pace has increased this year, with 23 additional Golden State dealers closing in the first seven weeks of 2009, said Peter Welch, head of the California... Full article...

Honda names new president amid slowdown | detnews.com | The Detroit News
TOKYO -- Honda Motor Co. named Takanobu Ito, head of core automaking operations, as its new chief executive Monday, in an effort to provide fresh leadership to battle a global crisis in the auto industry. Ito, a 55-year-old research and development expert with U.S. experience, replaces Takeo Fukui, 64, who will remain on the board as adviser, Japan's No. 2 automaker said in a statement. Both Fukui and Ito said the change at the helm is a message of its determination to turn a new leaf and press ahead... Full article...

At least Mercedes' nerdy little ute is a gem mechanically | detnews.com | The Detroit News
If ever you needed a reason to shoot out the light in your garage, may I present the 2010 Mercedes-Benz GLK 350, a vivacious and elegant little ute disguised as a vandalized Subaru Forester. What's the deal here? The exterior is a veritable food fight of odd angles and curious proportions, fender swells and dissonant accent lines, and all of it buttoned by a hilariously oversized, nay, desperate grille. The GLK suggests nothing less than a Dadaist collage of the company's styling portfolio pasted onto a... Full article...

Mitsubishi Leaves Dakar Rally
Shocking news from Japan: all the work of Mitsubishi Motorsports is stopped, so there will be no more rallying, no more Dakar prizes. The automaker has taken part in Dakar rally 26 times, 12 of which were won. The Japanese manufacturer got so good in sport that it kept coming first seven times in a row. But those days are in the past because the company is cutting corners as well as many other firms and sport suffers first as an unnecessary luxury. Mitsubishi claims its good results in rallies for the... Full article...

Hurst resurrects specialty cars | detnews.com | The Detroit News
If you are of a certain age, you have fond memories of the Hurst/Olds, the Hemi Under Glass, perhaps even the Hurst/SC/Rambler. Hurst, founded in 1958 by East Coast hot rodder George Hurst, became popular among automotive enthusiasts because of its Hurst shifter, a sleek looking, high-performance curved gearshift lever. Hurst promoted its aftermarket equipment by building specialty cars such as the Hemi Under Glass, a 1965 Plymouth Barracuda drag racer. In 1968, Hurst expanded the program with... Full article...

Downsizing the right way: 2009 Nissan Maxima replaces size with style | detnews.com | The Detroit News
Times are tougher than boiled brisket. That's nothing new to Detroit. We've been chewing this entree for years, and we find little solace that the rest of the country finally gets a seat at our table. At least we have a country song written about us. There's always a silver lining -- even if it's a tarnished silver plated one. Optimism, you see, is free. The 2009 Nissan Maxima makes me optimistic. Finally, a big sedan undergoes a redesign and comes out smaller. Nissan chopped off nearly 4 inches in... Full article...
