'Clunkers' program gives Ford a boost | detnews.com | The Detroit News
As the federal government looks to add billions more to the "cash for clunkers" program, at least one Detroit automaker is attributing a boost in July sales to the popular effort. Ford Motor Co. will report its first monthly year-over-year sales gain in nearly two years today, thanks to a much-needed push from the program, company officials said Sunday. The Dearborn automaker would not provide specific figures until today. The $1 billion federal program to retire less efficient vehicles is all but out... Full article...

Detroit cars still in teens' daydreams | detnews.com | The Detroit News
"Dad, would you buy me a Camaro?" Before I could muster an answer to my 17-year-old daughter's question, she spotted a new Ford Mustang. "That's a cool car, too," she said, as I drove her to school one morning. There followed a brief and poorly received lecture from me on why a powerful rear-wheel-drive sports model is probably not the best choice for a teenager's first car. Further efforts to ascertain what makes the Mustang and Camaro "cool" in a 17-year-old's opinion did not reveal much. But the... Full article...

Auto dealers: Ease up credit | detnews.com | The Detroit News
The banks need to loosen up. That's the message from a month's worth of interviews with consumers and automobile dealers nationwide. It's also the conclusion of a new study by Accenture, a global management consulting company. The banks need to be less stingy with credit. That would do as much to help the struggling automobile industry as the latest government bailout. Tight credit is strangling the industry, putting suppliers, dealers and consumers at risk. It's not so much that consumers are on strike... Full article...

Hyundai Nuvis concept
Hyundai Nuvis concept was unveiled at the New York Auto Show in all its gullwing door glory. The crossover with a hybrid powertrain has exteriors designed to create an illusion of perpetual motion, much like the way water flows around the hull of a boat. The exterior creates the effect of a tall, premium urban vehicle. Interiors have a blue acrylic theme, the center stack and ambient lighting are blue as well. Fabric on the seats comes from recycled soda bottles. The hybrid powertrain combines a 2.4-l... Full article...

RMR Hyundai Genesis Coupe starts Formula D season with Nissan power
When Rhys Millen debuted the new Hyundai Genesis Coupe at the season's first Formula Drift event at Long Beach, not all was what it seemed. When the factory-supported drift program was announced in February at the Chicago Auto Show, it was still in its formative stages. The original press release noted that the car would be powered by a stroked and turbocharged 4.1-liter version of Hyundai's Lambda V6 cranking out 550 hp. However, Hyundai didn't give final approval for the drift program with... Full article...

Hyundai's strategy paying off | detnews.com | The Detroit News
Detroit's automakers have lost their mojo and not even some of the stellar products they have today are doing much to bring it home. Hyundai, it appears, has found it. The South Korean automaker once known for "cheap and cheerful" economy cars has kicked its game up a few notches and even those who chuckled at the thought of owning one now are paying attention. It's been hard not to with the massive ad campaign the company is waging. Ad campaign resonatesThink Sunday. As in Super Bowl Sunday, the day... Full article...

A new social compact: Honda Civic best all-around choice in '09 lineup | detnews.com | The Detroit News
There's no doubting the variety that comes with compact cars. Some, such as the Volvo C30 and Audi A3, are more luxurious, while others, like the Mini Cooper, have cult-like followings. All of them, however, share a few common attributes. In auto parlance, they are known as C-Segment vehicles, something that falls between the B and D segments. The EPA defines them as vehicles with interior volumes measuring between 100 and 109.9 cubic feet, but most people wouldn't know a cubic foot from a... Full article...

Wealthy put car buys on the shelf or trade down | detnews.com | The Detroit News
NAPLES, Fla. -- If you win $10 million in the lottery, the local joke goes, you still won't qualify to be among the wealthiest 10,000 households here. But even the rolling elite of Naples' exclusive Port Royal, Grey Oaks and Pelican Marsh enclaves are feeling a little thriftier in these uncertain times. The real estate crash, followed by a glut of multimillion-dollar homes and condos for sale, and now Madoff jitters and Wall Street's meltdown have cast a rare chill over the pockets and purses of the...
