GM won't build G8 sport truck | detnews.com | The Detroit News
General Motors Corp. told dealers today it has killed the Pontiac G8 ST sport truck, which was scheduled for production this fall. The move comes as GM plans to shrink the Pontiac portfolio as part of a broader restructuring plan that involves cutting 21,000 to 31,000 jobs, eliminating about 1,750 dealers and closing or selling Saab, Hummer and Saturn. GM is shrinking Pontiac into more of a niche brand and will save money by canceling the G8 ST and focusing the brand on "sporty, fun to drive cars,"... Full article...

Honda's natural solution to high gas prices | detnews.com | The Detroit News
The price of clean fuel is angst. Other than that, it's pretty cheap. The No. 1 problem with the 2009 Honda Civic GX, the only natural gas burning compact car on sale today to the public, is it uses natural gas. Every time I started to enjoy the car, I would take a peek at the white fuel gauge and see it slowly ticking toward empty. My heart would race and this sick feeling would begin to overwhelm me. All I could hear was the voice of the man who dropped off the Civic for my week-long test... Full article...

Mallya pitches against Carlos Slim to buy Honda's F1
Flamboyant Indian business tycoon Vijay Mallya is pitched against Mexican billionaire and one of the world’s richest persons, Carlos Slim Helu, among others for buying the Formula One team of Japanese auto giant Honda, a report said on Monday. Honda put its Formula One team on the block earlier this month as it decided to move out of the racing activities due to the economic slowdown saying that it was looking to sell the team by the end of the year. In a report published today, automotive industry... Full article...

Ford Fusion Is the Best at Fuel Efficiency
Though the whole world appreciated Toyota and Honda for fuel efficient hybrids, according to the data Ford overcame it being certified for a very good gas usage. Most often the people who want to save on fuel go to a dealership to buy a Toyota Prius, but the most fuel efficient car of this brand is Camry Hybrid, which gets 34 mpg on highway and 33 mpg in the city limit. Honda Civic is a little better than that using up to 35 mpg in the city. Ford Fusion has been tested in Allen Park, Michigan this week... Full article...

Vehicle recalls plunge | detnews.com | The Detroit News
WASHINGTON -- Automakers recalled 10.2 million vehicles last year, down nearly 30 percent compared with 2007 and the lowest number of vehicles called back for repairs since 1994, preliminary government statistics show. The decline came as the total number of recall campaigns jumped more than 9 percent to a record 642 from 588 in 2007, and those linked to investigations by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration rose to a record 233, up from 98 in 2007. The improvement in the number of autos... Full article...

Big drop expected for Dec. car sales | detnews.com | The Detroit News
Monday will bring more bad news from automakers when they report December and full-year sales, both of which are expected to be down dramatically over last year's totals. The industry as a whole sold about 13.2 million cars and trucks in 2008 in the United States, down from 16.5 million units in 2007, according to Ford Motor Co. That is the lowest sales tally since 1992. It represents the biggest year-over-year decline since the first oil crisis in 1974. And there is little prospect for improvement... Full article...

Ford Fusion Hybrid: The car of the future? | detnews.com | The Detroit News
As we know from the literary works of Cormac McCarthy, despair can be kind of gratifying. And yet, as much as I hate to disturb our national mood of decline, I have some good news regarding the auto industry. You may return to your comfort drinking presently. The 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid, and its twin, the Mercury Milan Hybrid, are mid-to-full-size sedans that seat five in surprising comfort and offer a full-size trunk measuring around 12 cubic feet. They measure 190.6 inches and weigh a goodly 3,720... Full article...

R-E-S-P-E-C-T: Find out what it means to Chevy | detnews.com | The Detroit News
Little cars get no respect. But the court of public opinion requires that nearly every carmaker bring out a subcompact of some type. It takes wee wheels for automakers to earn some respect from frugal consumers, fuel conservationists and federally elected officials. These tiny vehicles may not be the savior for the environment or for any particular carmaker, unless consumers decide they're willing to pay $30,000 for them. But some are starting to earn a little R-E-S-P-E-C-T in Motown. The reason... Full article...

2009 Audi A4 Avant: A wagon with heart | detnews.com | The Detroit News
I really should get a Sun Pass. In Florida, the Sun Pass is the electronic thingy you put on your dash and it pays tolls or other charges on your credit card or something. We don't have anything like it in the greater Detroit area because we don't collect tolls or even repair roads. But other enterprising states use this popular device to speed up traffic, collect revenue and convict commuting criminals -- just watch "Law and Order." I don't know exactly how it works, and I may not like the idea of The... Full article...
