Geely CE concept headed for Beijing
Chinese car designers are rarely lauded for their efforts, mostly because of the country’s reputation for ‘borrowing’ designs from other carmakers, but one company, Geely, is helping to turn around the bad rep with a number of interesting concepts it has planned for the upcoming Beijing Motor Show. Our previous story on the Geely GT concept revealed a concept with swooping lines, and a very original front grille that looks both svelte and alluring. Now Geely has released another concept... Buyers dropping more coin on the 2008 Chevy Malibu
The 2008 Chevy Malibu has snatched up awards and media accolades, and JD Power data shows that customers are paying Chevy dealers handsomely to own one. The average transaction price of a Chevy Malibu is $22,358 -- $5,000 higher than the inherently uncool last-gen 'Bu. Twenty-one percent of buyers are also opting for the top-of-the-line LTZ vs. only 5% for the outgoing model. The news isn't all rosy, however, as most of these customers are trading in other GM products to get themselves into the North... Full article...

GM cashes in with made-over Malibu
The critical acclaim was nice, but now the made-over Chevrolet Malibu appears to be raking in something General Motors Corp. covets even more: cash. Car buyers are paying $5,000 more on average for a new Malibu compared to the old models, according to J.D. Power and Associates. And six months after the vehicle's much-hyped launch, the higher prices are holding up despite a rough economy and some tough competition. It's a singular feat for a new vehicle launch, especially by a domestic automaker with a... Full article...

California cuts clean car goal
WASHINGTON -- The California Air Resources Board on Thursday reduced the number of zero-emission vehicles the top six automakers must sell in the state, but didn't go as far as the board's staff and U.S. automakers urged. The board will require the automakers to sell a combined 7,500 zero-emission vehicles from 2012 through 2014, a 70 percent cut from a previous mandate of 25,000 vehicles. Bowing to sharp criticism from environmentalists and politicians in California, the board rejected a proposal from... Full article...

Bentley, and luxury cars generally, face life or death struggle
One headline made me do a double-take at the annual Geneva Car Show early in March. "Geneva 2008: Bentley to go 120 G/km by 2012" Let me try and explain some of that gobbledygook. "G/km" is short for grammes of carbon dioxide CO2 per kilometre. That's European shorthand for how much a car apparently threatens the climate with its emissions of CO2. This formula is simply a more opaque way of expressing a more familiar measurement of miles per gallon. After quickly consulting my conversion table I can... Full article...

California regulators debate zero-emissions rules
WASHINGTON -- The California Air Resources Board is meeting today, grappling with the question of how many zero-emission vehicles the top six automakers will be required to build annually in 2012, with one member suggesting it be four times what the board's staff proposed. Last month, CARB's staff said in a 52-page report that it should reduce by 90 percent the number of zero-emission vehicles -- fuel-cell and battery-electric vehicles -- would be required to 2,500, down from 25,000 under the current... Auto briefs
KANSAS CITY, Mo . -- General Motors Corp . has agreed to settle a series of class-action lawsuits claiming a faulty engine coolant damaged thousands of customer vehicles. Under the settlement, GM would reimburse class members between $50 and $800 for repairs linked to Dex-Cool, an orange coolant that GM included in cars and trucks beginning in 1995. The total cost to GM will depend on the number of customers claiming damages, but the plaintiffs' attorneys estimate the settlement could cover up to 20... Full article...

Dispute cited in top Chrysler engineer's departure
DETROIT -- One of Chrysler LLC's top engineers left the company Tuesday because of a dispute with senior managers, a person with knowledge of the situation said Tuesday. Mike Donoughe was leading the company's effort to develop a new generation of global midsize cars. The person said Donoughe clashed with Peter Arnell, a marketing consultant hired by Chrysler Chairman and Chief Executive Bob Nardelli. The person asked not to be named because Chrysler wasn't publicizing the reason for Donoughe's... Full article...

In the Autoblog Garage: 2008 Honda Civic Si sedan
Click above for a high-res gallery of the Honda Civic Si sedan. We've avoided glossy-eyed retrospectives of 2007, but if you were in the market for a practical, affordable and entertaining ride in the last year, there were a handful of vehicles to be had for under $25 large. The Mazdaspeed3, R56 MINI Cooper S and VW GTI have set the fun-to-drive quotient relatively high, but one vehicle that's been left out of the Autoblog Garage is the Honda Civic Si. While the coupe has garnered its fair share of... Full article...
