Launch of GM's Cruze delayed 3 months | detnews.com | The Detroit News
General Motors Co. said it has delayed the launch of its Chevrolet Cruze small car about three months until the third quarter of 2010 to ensure a flawless launch. The delay also will give GM time to produce all variations of Cruze models, the automaker said Wednesday. It was not related to any problems associated with earlier Cruze launches in Europe or China, GM spokesman Klaus-Peter Martin said. Industry analyst Erich Merkle of Autoconomy.com has not heard of any problems associated with the Cruze... Full article...

Green-off: Hybrid models put to the test | detnews.com | The Detroit News
"I want a hybrid." I've heard that from more than one reader, and I have come to realize that most people don't really know a thing about hybrids. Not all hybrids are created equal and not every hybrid will fit into every garage the same. First, let's define "hybrid." These are cars that run on gas and electric drivetrains. Some carmakers don't like the idea of hybrids because they have to create two powertrains for a single vehicle. Consumers, however, don't seem to mind. These cars are not the final... Saab seeks tax breaks for Royal Oak HQ | detnews.com | The Detroit News
Saab Cars USA is seeking state and local tax breaks to open a U.S. headquarters in Royal Oak once the brand is sold by General Motors Co. Saab is looking to invest $2.2 million over five years to relocate mostly sales and marketing employees from the Renaissance Center to an industrial building at 4327 Delemere Court between 14 Mile and Normandy. The company, which did not specify how many employees would move, also is eyeing a site in Connecticut. Snagging Saab would be a coup for Southeast Michigan... Full article...

China challenges U.S. tire tariffs | detnews.com | The Detroit News
-- President Barack Obama's decision to impose heavy tariffs on Chinese-made tires may prompt China to retaliate against U.S. auto and poultry exports. China took its case to the World Trade Organization Monday, after Obama ordered additional U.S. tariffs on Chinese tires for three years, including 35 percent in the first year. The increases come on top of the current 4 percent tariff. Besides challenging the tire tariffs before the WTO, the Chinese government said it would investigate on its own to... Full article...

Missouri Hummer dealer freshens product line with guns | detnews.com | The Detroit News
Jim Lynch owns $7.5 million worth of car dealership devoted to a brand that's no longer in production and might or might not continue to exist, depending on the whim of the Chinese government. This is not a good business model. For seven years, back when the Hummer H1 roamed the Earth, Lynch Hummer of Chesterfield, Mo., was the leading Hummer dealer in America. It could barely see the second-place dealer in its enormous side-view mirrors. That ended in 2003, when the pencil-necked sissies at GM... Full article...

Remaining GM dealers face tough standards, sales goals | detnews.com | The Detroit News
-- General Motors Co. dealers who survived the automaker's bankruptcy were told Friday they will have to average higher sales and spend more updating their facilities. Some will also have to get used to selling smaller, more fuel-efficient and better-equipped vehicles than during the industry's SUV-crazy heyday. GM executives met with 430 dealers from around the Midwest at the Rock Financial Showplace as part of a nine-city tour to discuss the future of the automaker's four core brands: Chevrolet... Custom $4,000 grille sets a Camaro apart | detnews.com | The Detroit News
When we first saw the $4,000 price tag on the Camaro Marquise Collection grille for Chevrolet's 21st century muscle car, we wondered if people really would invest that much to customize the look of a car with a base price sticker of less than $23,000. Turns out, they will, and they are. "We used the same thinking we did when we developed the Bentley-look grille for the Chrysler 300," said Tommy Gaut, general manager of Strut, which produces automotive jewelry, especially for very high-end vehicles such... Mercedes-Benz GLK350 is compact luxury | detnews.com | The Detroit News
Americans would have been lousy hunters and gatherers. That's why we invented Costco. The buy-it-by-the-barrelful mentality perpetuates the American need to gather too much stuff while hunting for a deal. I've gone broke saving money at this mega-volume store. For some, the problem with Costco is the same as the problem with many SUVs: Both offer too much and are just too big for practical purposes. No one tows a boat to work every day, and no one needs 200 frozen chicken breasts. Downsizing is the new... Full article...

2009 Auto Shanghai: Crisis, What Crisis?
"We've paid for our show stand," said Bentley engineering chief Ulrich Eichhorn as we sat in the back of a Continental Flying Spur to escape the heat and the noise of the first media day at Auto Shanghai 2009. All four Bentleys on display -- the Flying Spur, a Continental GT Speed and GTC Speed, and an Arnage -- had been sold to eager Chinese buyers by 2pm.A few minutes earlier, Rolls-Royce boss Tom Purves had announced the new "small" Rolls-Royce would be called the Ghost, and... 2009 Geneva Auto Show: 2010 Bentley Continental Supersports
English manufacturer Bentley is going to bring 2010 Bentley Continental Supersports to the 2009 Geneva Auto Show. Seems like designers wanted to satisfy the widest range of customers ever: the car is fast, very powerful and environmentally friendly: it can run on both gasoline and E85. The car has a 6.0-liter W12 twin-turbocharged engine that gives it a lot of muscle: 621 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque. If desired 2010 Bentley can reach the top speed of 204 mph. The automaker is proud of... Full article...
