Aussie Ford Falcon prototypes spotted in U.S.
Ford has confirmed development of its future RWD program will be spearheaded by an American design team in Detroit and not by its Australian division as earlier suspected. That doesn’t mean the Aussies won’t have an influential role in the gestation of America’s future RWD fleet as evidenced by the pair of FG Ford Falcon prototypes spotted testing in the Detroit area. The sighting of the Falcon test-mules in the U.S. backs recent reports that Ford’s new RWD architecture will borrow... Full article...

BMW to build Alfa Romeos in U.S.?
Earlier this week Fiat boss Sergio Marchionne revealed his desire to partner with an American carmaker over a deal to build Alfa Romeos in the U.S., but according to latest reports BMW could be the carmaker Fiat signs up with. Alfa Romeo has been planning its 2009 North American relaunch for years but the recent weakening in the U.S. dollar against the euro has thrown a spanner in the works. The best solution is to start manufacturing cars locally but Alfa Romeo will need help. Although teaming with one... Full article...

BMW tops quality survey, Hummer comes second
Luxury brands have once again dominated an annual U.S. vehicle quality survey conducted by Californian research company Strategic Vision Inc. However, in a surprise result Hummer came second. The results also showed that overall quality in the industry had actually dropped for the first time in four years. Volkswagen Group, which includes the likes of Audi and Bentley, topped the results for a corporation with a total quality index score of 892 out of 1,000 possible points. GM finished second as a... BMW’s U.S. chief appointed as Rolls Royce CEO
BMW and its subsidiaries have had a bit of a management reshuffle with the biggest change being the appointment of the carmaker’s U.S. chief, Tom Purves, as the new CEO of Rolls-Royce. Purves, 59, will start his new role on the first of July, succeeding Ian Robertson, 49, who is replacing the departing Stefan Krause as BMW’s head of sales and marketing. CAFE to cost Japan half what it will cost Detroit
The cost of the United States’ new CAFE regulations has been widely speculated - and the figures are generally expected to be high - but the first real calculations of what impact the legislation will have on the industry are beginning to be developed. One analyst firm things the American Big Three will end up paying at least twice what Japan’s three largest auto makers will have to pay to comply with the standards. The cost of meeting the goals, which require makers to average 31.6mpg... Full article...

Carmakers to promote fuel-efficient driving
Driving in a fuel-efficient manner is often a matter of common sense, but it’s still not a common practice. To increase awareness of things motorists can do to improve their car’s fuel efficiency a coalition of auto manufacturers and private businesses are launching a campaign centered around a website that challenges people to drive smarter. The campaign will be officially launched tomorrow, May 20 in Washington, DC. The website, called Drive Smarter Challenge, features an interactive... Full article...

Caterham releases teaser for new Superlight R500
British niche sports car company Caterham has released a teaser image for a new version of its iconic roadster dubbed the Superlight R500. Details are scarce but expect the car to feature a modified Ford four-cylinder engine and a kerb weight of less than 500kg. Although we doubt the new Superlight R500 will be as potent as the 500hp 2.4L V8 model pictured in the gallery below, even with a modest 250hp the R500 should be able to sprint from 0-60mph in about 3.5 seconds and reach a top speed in excess of...
