WASHINGTON -- Japanese automakers dominated Consumer Reports influential annual survey of the most reliable vehicles, with Toyota Motor Corp. nabbing five of the 2009 Top 10 Picks released Thursday. Japanese automakers held the top four overall spots in the magazine's survey, which is based on more than 50 tests of 80 different vehicles. The winners ranked high in road tests, reliability and safety requirements. American vehicles were pummeled in the magazine's April survey, which goes on sale Tuesday... Full article...

Ford cuts sales forecast, but won't seek aid | detnews.com | The Detroit News
Ford Motor Co. cut its U.S. auto sales forecast for 2009 by another million vehicles Thursday, but continued to insist it does not need federal assistance to survive. The Dearborn automaker now expects U.S. car and truck sales to fall as low as 10.5 million units, citing a deepening economic crisis and the government's failure to free up the nation's credit markets, according to a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission. Ford also said it would cut first-quarter production estimates for the... Full article...

Judge grants Delphi request to end benefits for 15,000 retirees | detnews.com | The Detroit News
NEW YORK -- A federal bankruptcy judge granted Delphi Corp. permission to cancel its salaried retiree health care and life insurance -- a move that will end benefits for 15,000 people as early as April 1 and save the Troy-based auto supplier more than $70 million annually. "Every dollar counts," said U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Robert Drain in his ruling, noting that Delphi will save $1.5 million a week by eliminating the health and insurance payments and represents "good business judgment" by the struggling... Ford execs, workers to take pay hit | detnews.com | The Detroit News
Ford Motor Co. Executive Chairman Bill Ford Jr. and CEO Alan Mulally said they would take a voluntary 30 percent pay cut Tuesday as the struggling automaker asked union workers to accept major concessions that could cost them thousands of dollars a year. The company also is eliminating bonuses for all salaried employees for a second consecutive year and is suspending cash compensation for board members to help meet its goal of returning to profitability in 2011, according to a memo e-mailed to... Polls: Most oppose auto aid | detnews.com | The Detroit News
WASHINGTON -- The nation has spoken, Michigan, and we are all alone on this business of auto bailouts. A series of recent national opinion polls shows a large majority of Americans opposed to the idea of more federal aid to General Motors and Chrysler, putting the Obama administration in the tricky position of balancing economic necessity with political reality. "The president is a very smart guy. I think he knows a bailout of the auto industry is unpopular with the country at large," said Pennsylvania... Full article...

Court allows Delphi cuts | detnews.com | The Detroit News
NEW YORK -- A federal bankruptcy court on Tuesday allowed Delphi Corp. to end salaried retiree health and life insurance benefits for 15,000 people, the starkest example of the auto supplier's mounting financial woes. U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Robert Drain acknowledged that some retirees would suffer "dire" consequences, but said Delphi was exercising appropriate business judgment in ending the benefits starting April 1. The move will save the Troy-based parts maker more than $70 million annually and reduce... Full article...

Bridgestone gears up teen safety programs | detnews.com | The Detroit News
As a parent, one of life's more daunting challenges is preparing teenage children to drive. From personal experience I can attest that seeing a 17-year-old daughter head out on the road solo for the first time is nerve wracking. One can follow the normal procedures -- I paid for my daughter to go through a driver's education course, with school room classes and driving tuition and have tried to impart my own wisdom -- but the effort did not seem entirely sufficient. No matter how many times you lecture... Full article...

Sneak peek: 2011 F-250 Super Duty | detnews.com | The Detroit News
The 2011 Super Duty is expected to receive a major styling refresh, similar to the extent of the 2008 model year update. The current blue oval heavy-dutys took their exterior inspiration from the mighty Ford F-350 Tonka concept that debuted at the 2002 Detroit auto show. The practice round for the 2011 model appears to be the bold Ford F-250 Super Chief Concept, first shown at the 2006 Detroit auto show. The current Super Duty's hallmark side nostrils appear to have vanished, replaced by distinctive... Full article...

UAW, Ford reach health care deal | detnews.com | The Detroit News
WASHINGTON -- The United Auto Workers said today it had reached a tentative deal with Ford Motor Co. on how it will fund a health care trust that takes over payment of hourly retiree health care beginning next year. The deal allows Ford the option to use common stock for up to 50 percent of each scheduled payment into the health care trust -- the Voluntary Employee Benefit Association -- in lieu of cash. "We will consider each payment when it is due and use our discretion in determining whether cash or... Full article...
