Big 3's hybrid message: We will survive; we will be green | detnews.com | The Detroit News
Kicking off the most important auto show of a crucial year, Detroit's Big Three automakers unveiled stylish, fuel-efficient and high-tech vehicles Sunday aimed at winning back customers from import brands and countering doomsayers and critics in Washington and across the country. "You can't look at the array of cars that we've brought up on stage today and say these guys don't get it, these cars are ugly, and these cars don't perform," said GM Vice Chairman Bob Lutz, the Detroit industry's most eloquent... Distinctive 2009 Mazda6 is a worthy competitor in its class | detnews.com | The Detroit News
In society, you're considered to have arrived when you meet or exceed the expectations of your contemporaries. That's a fair characterization of the 2009 Mazda6. It has arrived as a worthy competitor to the leaders among mid-size sedans -- the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord -- as well as contenders like the Nissan Altima, Chevrolet Malibu, Volkswagen Passat and Ford Fusion, and some luxury cars as well. That's not to say the 6 wasn't a decent car before. But it was smaller and more of a sports sedan than... Full article...

Hybrid hype only for a few | detnews.com | The Detroit News
Forget what you think about hybrids for a minute and consider a few facts. They cost more than most people can -- or will -- pay; they provide fuel efficiency benefits only for specific and limited driving conditions; and the technology isn't going to solve America's oil issues. Sure, they're still somewhat trendy, and select members of Congress as well as Hollywood hypocrites regularly remind people that they drive the so-called green machines. Good for them and for the few others in America who are... Full article...

Detroit-area drivers do not fear big snowfalls | detnews.com | The Detroit News
The Bangles taught us how to walk like an Egyptian back in 1986. The number one pop hit still makes for great driving music, and if you're the least bit creative, you can change the lead lyrics to "Drive like a De• troit• er." With winter's full fury upon us, it's time to brush up on our driving skills so we're not paralyzed the next time global warming smacks us with another 10 inches of snow. Ground clearance importantThe best way to drive like a Detroiter -- totally unafraid of the elements... Full article...

Vehicle recalls plunge | detnews.com | The Detroit News
WASHINGTON -- Automakers recalled 10.2 million vehicles last year, down nearly 30 percent compared with 2007 and the lowest number of vehicles called back for repairs since 1994, preliminary government statistics show. The decline came as the total number of recall campaigns jumped more than 9 percent to a record 642 from 588 in 2007, and those linked to investigations by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration rose to a record 233, up from 98 in 2007. Dormant car ready for road | detnews.com | The Detroit News
Dear Tom and Ray: I am an old lady, 83, and I have a 2003 Ford Focus coupe with all the bells and whistles and only 3,000 miles on it. It has sat in my Ohio garage since 2004 with only an occasional one-mile trip around the block. My granddaughter graduates from college this summer and I want to give her this car, but the local garage says it isn't safe, that it needs new everything, even tires. Please, "Say It Ain't So." Just what do I need to replace? I have had the oil and gas changed, and the brakes... Full article...

Prosperous 2009 wishes for the Big 3 | detnews.com | The Detroit News
Can you remember a year that you'd rather forget more than 2008? Everything -- stock prices, new car dealers, housing, CD yields, job openings -- tanked, it seemed. Good riddance. So it's time to look forward to the coming year with some New Year's resolutions and a wish-list. • For Detroit's automakers, may U.S. consumers catch a chronic case of "Buy America" fever. The market has collapsed faster than the new Corvette ZR1 can rip from zero to 60 mph, so here's hoping the Obama administration's... Full article...
