Saab launches Pure BioPower Eco Clothing Collection
Saab has embraced E85 as an alternative fuel in Europe as a way to offer good performance and relatively good emissions using small turbocharged engines. Because ethanol has a higher octane rating than gasoline, boost pressure can be raised, allowing for a higher specific power output. It also helps that Saab already had a history of being quirky and using turbocharged engines in their vehicles. As an added bonus, it also gets to capitalize on the "green" aspect of the biofuel, and is leaving no... Full article...

Toyota thinks outside box
Toyota likes to think of its quirky, boxy Scion as a 21st-century chariot of the soul -- not just an affordable car, but also a unique expression of the young, hip person who Toyota hopes is driving it. Now Toyota's Scion enthusiasts will have even more "me time": a marketing campaign with an underground vibe intended to show just how much their chosen transportation reflects their personality. With an eye to the social networking ethos that has made Facebook and MySpace wildly popular, Toyota will let... Full article...

California eases quotas for zero-emissions vehicles
The California Air Resources Board CARB has today agreed to reduce the number of zero-emissions vehicles carmakers are mandated to build each year by 70%, easing an earlier target that would have seen them sell up to 25,000 zero-emissions vehicles between 2012-2014. This figure has now been reduced to just 7,500, and only the top six carmakers have to meet the new regulation. While the reduction may seem like a backwards step, the board is in instead focusing on viable technologies by increasing quotas... Full article...

Fisker Karma plug-in hybrid confirmed for Europe
Just days after the announcement Tesla’s all-electric Roadster is to be sold in Europe comes confirmation rival niche sports carmaker Fisker Automotive will sell its Karma luxury plug-in hybrid saloon in Europe as well. Fisker appointed its first European importer today, Fisker Italia, and eventually hopes to sell up to 50% of its fleet in Europe. Tesla sues Fisker over stolen electric-car designs
Both Tesla and Fisker plan to sell a new generation of electric vehicles - Tesla with its recently launched all-electric Roadster and Fisker with its future Karma plug-in hybrid luxury saloon. The two carmakers are now tied up in a lawsuit with Tesla claiming design and trade secrets for a future electric sedan were ‘borrowed’ by Fisker Coachbuild – the company originally commissioned by Tesla to design the car. Tesla Motors can't seem to keep itself out of the press, can it? The newest flare-up concerns rival Fisker and claims that the automaker has stolen trade secrets and copied design concepts. In a lawsuit filed Monday by Tesla, the carmaker accuses Henrik Fisker -- whom the company had hired to design its WhiteStar sedan -- of accepting the work to "gain access to confidential design information and trade secrets."The company alleges that Fisker then used that knowledge to launch a competing vehicle, and... Magna sues Tesla over unpaid bill
It seems electric car manufacturer Tesla is having trouble keeping its nose clean these days - just a day after our report on Tesla suing Fisker Automotive for deliberately stealing designs, the electric-sports-car startup is now embroiled in another lawsuit and this time ‘round it’s playing the role of defendant. Tesla is being sued by automotive components design company, Magna Powertrain. Tesla had originally contracted Magna to design and build 800 Dark Star transmissions in the first year... Tables turned: Tesla Motors sued by transmission supplier Magna
Birthing a car is always difficult, and Tesla has seen its share of problems. The biggest hurdle to getting its all-EV Roadsters in customers' garages has been the transmission. Initially the company wanted to have a two-speed unit, but the unit from its first supplier, X-Trac, wasn't durable enough. Tesla then contracted Magna to help build a tranny, before a final try at designing its own transmission also ended abortively. In the end, to get cars rolling out the door, changes were made to the motor... Full article...

Spy Shots: Fisker Karma luxury plug-in hybrid
Fisker Automotive is keen to launch its Karma plug-in hybrid by the end of the next year and is hard at work testing prototypes of the upcoming eco-saloon in Southern California. Less than five months out from the concept version’s debut at the Detroit Auto Show, the new prototype reveals Fisker is keeping its promise that the production version will be almost identical to the original concept. The new Karma will be a plug-in hybrid vehicle, which means it will be able to run on electric power alone... Full article...
