Combination 2/4-stroke engine prototype tested
Smaller, more powerful motors are the future of the auto industry. GM and Chrysler are focusing on smaller four- and six-cylinder motors for their Camaro and Challenger, while others are pushing the envelopes of forced-induction sub-2.0L powerplants. A new technology has appeared on the horizon, however, and it may steal all the glory if it proves cost-effective. Ricardo announced today it has completed initial testing of a dual two- and four-stroke engine which it claims can cut displacement in half... Full article...

Nearly half of all Challengers sold will be V6s
Just a few days after Bob Lutz told the press in New York that the Camaro could be getting a turbocharged four-cylinder powerplant, Chrysler has announced that it estimates 40% of Challenger sales will be V6-powered base models, like its competitor, the Ford Mustang. Although the company has been pushing the new Challenger as a muscle car with the images and video of its range-topping SRT8 model, which generates 425hp and 420lb-ft of torque from its 6.1L Hemi V8, it turns out the Challenger will be... Chrysler tapping consumers to design future products
Chrysler's "It's a new day" ad campaign has been in full swing for about a month, but very little substance has backed up the slogan. Now, Chrysler has extended a somewhat open arm to consumers and asked what they're looking for in a new vehicle. ChryslerListens.com is designed to fill that communications gap, asking customers in 1,000 words or less to tell the automaker's PR department what products they want to see coming from Chrysler.Beyond a basic form on the home page that allows you to speak your... Next Mustang and Falcon to share new RWD platform
In a move similar to GM’s plan to bring rear-drive Australian vehicles to U.S. shores, rival carmaker Ford is also planning to beef up its product lineup with some much needed RWD models. The new cars will be based around a single platform, in line with Ford’s new strategy of global platform sharing, and will eventually spawn the next-generation Mustang and Falcon models current version pictured as well as new sedans for both Ford North America and Lincoln. Despite Australia’s expertise in RWD... Full article...

Chrysler asks public to help design future cars
Chrysler announced today that it’s recruiting members of the public for its new ‘Customer Advisory Board’, an online forum where individuals can voice their ideas about what they want to see in a new car. Anyone can join the forum, including consumers who have never previously owned a Chrysler product. The idea of a forum, rather than using expensive and time-consuming focus groups, has been a long time coming considering the amount of free ideas and feedback Chrysler could gain with... Chrysler needs only half of its SUVs
Now that Chrysler is in private hands the tough decisions are coming hard and fast. Last year we saw officials axe cars like the PT Cruiser convertible, Pacifica, Crossfire and Dodge Magnum, and now there are reports that even more models will be dropped from the current lineup. Earlier this month Chrysler revealed its new ‘Project Genesis’ turnaround strategy with which it plans to drop overlapping models that share common platforms and compete in similar segments. The carmaker’s President, Jim... Full article...

Bringing up the rear: Ford to revive rear-wheel drive in U.S.
Ford Motor Co. is bringing rear-wheel-drive development back to the United States from Australia. The automaker also has green-lighted a vehicle platform that will provide the basis for a new generation of rear-wheel-drive cars, according to sources familiar with Ford's plans. Australia, where such vehicles remain popular, had emerged as Ford's center for rear-wheel-drive development. But changing economics have convinced the company to bring the program back to Dearborn. Sources said the new... Full article...

Chrysler expects to be profitable within 3 years
With Chrysler’s new owners Cerberus Capital Management making the hard and fast decisions, the carmaker is now on track to return to profitability. Even with the worsening U.S. economy and fluctuating exchange rates and commodity prices, CEO Bob Nardelli is confident Chrysler will be profitable within the next couple of years despite predictions the market will remain sour. Analysts expect U.S. auto sales to fall to 15.5 million cars this year, down from 16.1 million last year, but despite his... Full article...
