GM repays $297.6 million to Germany for Opel loan | detnews.com | The Detroit News
General Motors Co. today repaid 200 million euros $297.6 million in German government aid that kept its carmaker Adam Opel GmbH afloat this year. GM also said it will repay another 400 million euros $595 million by Nov. 30. The payment comes more than a week after GM's board of directors voted to keep Opel instead of selling it to Canada's Magna International Inc. and its Russian partner, Sberbank. The 1.5 billion euro $2.2 billion bridge loan was intended to keep Opel operating until a deal was... Full article...

Ford vehicle sales outlook: 'Worst is over' | detnews.com | The Detroit News
Ford Motor Co.'s top sales analyst said this November U.S. sales appear to be at least as strong as October, meaning the industry has once again found its footing after one of the worst declines in history. "So far, so good. We won't fall backwards from October," said George Pipas, head of sales analysis and forecasting at Ford. "The worst is over -- both from an economic standpoint and from an automotive standpoint." However, he warned that the recovery remains fragile, largely because too many... Full article...

Range Rover Sport retains a certain mystique | detnews.com | The Detroit News
There's just something about Land Rover. A few years ago, when SUV sales fell through the floor, Land Rover seemed immune. Even during this tight economy, as car sales have plummeted, Land Rover, a luxury SUV maker, reported a 6.6 percent increase in sales for October. Oh, it's taken its bumps and bruises along the trail -- as has every truck maker in recent history. But every day, another person falls under Land Rover's spell of crossing the Sahara to attend a Hollywood premiere. The 2010 Range Rover... Full article...

Chrysler to revamp fading midsize cars | detnews.com | The Detroit News
Chrysler Group LLC is counting on significantly higher sales of its midsize sedans to meet ambitious growth targets outlined last week in its five-year business plan, but the automaker has not been competitive for at least a decade in the market's largest vehicle segment. The Auburn Hills automaker, whose U.S. sales have fallen 39 percent this year, has been particularly stung by poor quality and consumers leaving for other brands. Chrysler executives are quick to admit to their struggles and... Full article...

Brazil pushes sugar ethanol at U.S. pumps | detnews.com | The Detroit News
-- Who could resent the attention being showered on electric cars? Stylish and clean, they're the darling of the renewable-energy crowd, which is hailing the scheduled roll-out of several e-powered models next year as a major blow against global warming. Well, Eduardo Leao, for one. He's executive director of Brazil's largest sugar-industry association, called UNICA, and he insists that cane-based ethanol produced in massive quantities by his members is a better alternative fuel for the environment than... 2010 Camaro SEMA show's car of the year | detnews.com | The Detroit News
The 2010 Chevrolet Camaro was the car of the year at the recent Specialty Equipment Market Association SEMA Show in Las Vegas, where vehicle customizers and automotive aftermarket parts and accessories companies tricked out at least 50 versions of GM's modern muscle car to showcase their ideas and products. General Motors Co.'s Chevrolet Division and GM Performance Parts were there as well, not only showing how GM's own designers and engineers would customize and personalize the car, but previewing some... Sneak peek: Chrysler 300 | detnews.com | The Detroit News
In one of the first signs of life we've seen at Chrysler in a while, this development car for the next-generation Chrysler 300 has been spotted. This modestly camouflaged mule likely has the 2011 front end grafted onto a current 300C SRT8 body to conduct airflow testing. A new motor, along with the new "LY" chassis, may also be underneath the body. The LY chassis will be a heavy rework of the current LX chassis. Some current components will be carried over. Fiat is said to be planning future cars on the... Full article...

Detroit parking garages highlight D.C. exhibit | detnews.com | The Detroit News
The parking garage, often considered the epitome of urban ugly, is getting validation of its architectural and social worth at a ground-breaking exhibit in Washington. "The parking garage defines our built world; our embrace of the car culture; and the price we've paid for that love affair," said Shannon Sanders McDonald, author of "The Parking Garage: Design and Evolution." McDonald's book is the inspiration for a National Building Museum exhibit, "House of Cars," which opened last month and has drawn... Full article...

Keep the satellite radio system | detnews.com | The Detroit News
Never mind the push-button starters or hands-free phones. Pull the plug on the novelty foot-well lighting and cut down on cup holders. Keep your heated seats. Just don't take my satellite radio away. I am the reverse of what marketers call an 'early adopter,' but a few years ago I ordered $129 worth of clearance satellite radio equipment from a mail-order catalogue. The big brown box arrived on my doorstep two days later and a love affair commenced. Actually, since I decided to install it myself rather... Full article...

R8 a reason to celebrate | detnews.com | The Detroit News
There will be nothing critical in this review. I should probably recuse myself from even writing about the 2010 Audi R8 5.2 FSI V-10 because I love this car. I will not be fair and balanced or even objective because life behind the wheel of the R8 5.2 FSI is one viewed through a rose-colored windshield. I am the Fox News of car reviews today for conservative drivers and MSNBC for those who lean so far left they're actually facing backwards. Oh, there are probably a few bad things that could be said... Full article...
