Howes: Insiders at new GM same as they ever were | detnews.com | The Detroit News
Outsiders? They don't need no stinkin' outsiders to run the post-bankruptcy General Motors Co. -- at least not on the management team detailed Thursday. The government-appointed board of directors is something else altogether, long as it is on outsiders from Wall Street, the telecom business and academia and short on anything approaching automotive experience. Welcome to one of the more salient untenables in the federal government's bailout-cum-bankruptcy of new GM: President Barack Obama's auto task... Full article...

Mercedes system helps keep drowsy drivers awake | detnews.com | The Detroit News
Mercedes-Benz has become the latest automaker to offer high-tech help to fight drowsiness while driving. Standard on the redesigned 2010 E-class models will be Mercedes' new Attention Assist system, designed to detect drowsiness on the part of the driver in the early stages, before it becomes a real danger, the German automaker said. It uses various sensors to monitor the driver's behavior, including slight weaving of the vehicle that results in "patterns of minor steering corrections," Mercedes said... Full article...

Summer cruising toward Woodward | detnews.com | The Detroit News
Even though temperatures might have you thinking it's barely June 1, we're already halfway through our precious summer. The good news is that there are still more car-centric events to enjoy in the five weeks before kids go back to school and the lakes begin to quiet. Of course, the Woodward Dream Cruise is Aug. 15. Don't be surprised to see yellow tape and old motorhomes showing up a week earlier. Many residents who live along the Woodward corridor from Ferndale to Pontiac have already made plans to be... Obama auto bailout draws fire | detnews.com | The Detroit News
-- Members of Congress, who left GM and Chrysler on the brink of collapse five months ago, sought Friday to take control of the auto bailout, with dozens of lawmakers pressing claims for dealers, workers and lenders. The complaints came from the political left and the right in a series of indignant press conferences and letters to administration officials: Rep. Dennis Kucinich, D-Ohio, one of Congress's most liberal members, compared the Obama's auto rescue to smothering a hospital patient with a... Full article...

GM, CAW reach tentative deal | detnews.com | The Detroit News
General Motors Corp. and the Canadian Auto Workers union have reached a tentative agreement in negotiations to reduce labor costs as mandated by the Canadian and Ontario governments as a condition of securing government loans. CAW President Ken Lewenza said the agreement between the United Auto Workers and GM a day earlier put pressure on the Canadian talks, as well as the need for GM to be able to put a comprehensive restructured business plan on President Barack Obama's desk within three days. A... Full article...

Ford unveils programs to woo GM, Chrysler buyers | detnews.com | The Detroit News
As Chrysler LLC and General Motors Corp. move to dismantle brands and close dealerships, other automakers are moving in to pick up the pieces. Analysts said it will take a couple more months to fully gauge consumer reaction to these moves, but Haig Stoddard of IHS Global Insight said one thing is already clear: "Ford is likely to be the big volume winner." While Chrysler touts the benefits of "quick-rinse" bankruptcy -- something GM is expected to soon enter into as well -- Ford Motor Co. is in the... Full article...

Fiat's Marchionne driven to succeed | detnews.com | The Detroit News
With his slightly rumpled appearance and casual manner, Sergio Marchionne seems more like a jovial professor than a hard-driving businessman. But the chief executive of Fiat SpA is in fact an inexhaustible, demanding and effective corporate boss with a string of turnarounds to his credit. Now, as Fiat prepares to take a stake in Chrysler LLC and seeks to acquire General Motors Corp.'s European and Latin American operations, Marchionne, 56, is embarking on the biggest challenge of his career. While some... Full article...

Survey: Honda most popular with suppliers | detnews.com | The Detroit News
Honda Motor Co. enjoys the best relations with its parts suppliers, displacing Toyota Motor Corp., which had held the top spot since 2002 in an annual survey of suppliers of the top six vehicle producers in North America. Detroit's automakers still lag the Japanese, but the gap has narrowed as Japan's leading carmakers have lost ground with suppliers in North America. Among the U.S. automakers, Ford Motor Co. extended its lead over its domestic rivals after improving its scores for the second year in a... Full article...

Report: German minister says Opel bids fall short | detnews.com | The Detroit News
BERLIN -- All three bids for General Motors Corp.'s Opel unit have shortcomings and a bankruptcy filing might still be a better option, Germany's economy minister was quoted as saying Sunday. The three bids filed last Wednesday by potential investors came from Italy's Fiat SpA, a consortium of Canadian auto parts maker Magna International Inc. and Russia's Sberbank, and U.S. buyout firm Ripplewood Holdings LLC. "We now have three offers for an Opel takeover, but that doesn't mean that one of them will... Full article...
