Irrational greenies, hands off my V-8
If I happen to hold an opinion that is politically correct, it's coincidence. For instance, I believe in personal responsibility, hate socialism, love God and recognize the general goodness of our country. My reluctance to embrace another PC view surfaced as I reviewed a new best/worst list of vehicles by the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy ACEEE. The selection criteria of this Washington, D.C., advisory group focuses on vehicular environmental impact as seen through the lens of global... Full article...

World’s tallest man gets custom car
At 2.58m 8ft 5in tall, Ukrainian born Leonid Stadnyk, the world’s tallest man, will find it tough getting behind the wheel of almost any vehicle. That’s why the Ukrainian government, at the request of its President Viktor Yushchenko, has delivered to Stadnyk a custom Chevrolet minivan capable of accommodating his extraordinary size. A lack of suitable vehicles meant Stadnyk was never able to apply for a driver’s license but after years of walking the 37-year old giant decided to finally write to... Full article...

At just a glance we can see which list is longer and instantly know if it's a vehicle that we'd personally drive. At the end of the evaluation we throw in a few verbs, several random adjectives and some technical jargon to make us all sound knowledgeable and it's a review! Just kidding. A little, at least. The 2008 Suzuki Grand Vitara Xsport that just left... Full article...

Bringing up the rear: Ford to revive rear-wheel drive in U.S.
Ford Motor Co. is bringing rear-wheel-drive development back to the United States from Australia. The automaker also has green-lighted a vehicle platform that will provide the basis for a new generation of rear-wheel-drive cars, according to sources familiar with Ford's plans. Australia, where such vehicles remain popular, had emerged as Ford's center for rear-wheel-drive development. But changing economics have convinced the company to bring the program back to Dearborn. Sources said the new... Full article...

Infiniti announces the FX35... still not the FX37
Click above for high-res gallery of the 2009 Infiniti FXIt is official. The all-new 2009 FX50 will not share the showroom floor with a rumored "FX37." Instead, Infiniti has chosen to keep the less-powerful sibling designated as the "FX35." That means the engine is the award-winning VQ35HR right out of the Infiniti G35 sedan -- not the sweet 3.7-liter 330-hp gem from the G37 Coupe. Under the hood of the FX, the slightly smaller six-cylinder is rated at 303 hp down just a few horses from the sedan's... Full article...

Mark LaNeve: Camaro won't be positioned as a muscle car
The hits just keep on coming for fans of the Chevy Camaro. Just yesterday, we quoted Bob Lutz as suggesting that the Camaro could get a four-cylinder engine option. Now we hear that Mark LaNeve, VP of sales and marketing for GM North America, says that, "We won't position it as a muscle car," speaking again of the 2010 Camaro. Sure, you could spend hours debating the terms "muscle car" and "pony car", but we're pretty sure that very few ever thought of the Camaro as a fuel-efficient option. But, that's... Full article...

Click image for a high-res gallery of the turbocharged Mitsubishi iI'm the resident kei car obsessive here at Autoblog. That means I'm the guy who actually thinks, "That is awesome," when he reads the Google translated announcement of yet another Suzuki Wagon R variant. Hell, I did two posts on the one-off Hello Kitty Mitsubishi i. Keis are cool. So, you can imagine how happy I was to see that Mitsubishi brought along a small fleet of its i minicars to the New York Auto Show this year. Mitsubishi's... Full article...

Auto briefs
NEW YORK -- Toyota Motor Corp. has cut its forecast for the U.S. auto market this year and now expects overall industry sales of around 15.5 million cars and trucks, according to Toyota executives at the New York car show. That range "is looking to be a more reasonable and realistic view," Randy Pflughaupt, vice president for marketing at Toyota Motor Sales USA, said at the auto show. At the start of the year, the Japanese automaker had predicted the market would be flat in 2008, with sales totaling... Full article...

Classic 'Vette, modern guts
The 1963 Chevrolet Corvette had dramatic styling, living up to its Sting Ray badge with a design that included gill-styled side sculpting, sharp creases, hidden headlamps and that famous split rear window on the first Corvette coupe. Still, there are those who are nostalgic for the original 'Vette, which for the last few years of its production was characterized by deep, tapered "coves" that flowed from just behind the front wheels back into the door panels. But as often is the case, nostalgia can blur... Full article...

So, gas is speeding toward $4 a gallon, the dollar is headed downhill equally as fast, people can't afford to keep their homes, the national economy is tanking -- with Michigan leading the way. What is to like about this situation? Actually, for those of us involved in the auto industry, the short-term pain may bring some long-term gain. For amid all the gloom and doom, there could be a bright side for the U.S. auto industry and for Michigan itself. The steep decline of the dollar against the euro has... Full article...
