April Foolery: Toyota resurrects Oldsmobile in its own image
We've been trying to keep a straight face today as we report all these April Fools jokes, but this one from Car and Driver is so ridiculous that we must forego all the winks and nods and state plainly that it is not real. C&D concocted an alternate universe in which General Motors forgot to renew its copyright on the Oldsmobile name, a gaff that Toyota exploits by purchasing the rights to the dead brand's storied name. The Japanese juggernaut plans to place Olds between Toyota and Lexus in much the... Full article...

By the Numbers: March 2008
Though many news outlets will decry March as a horrible sales month in the auto industry, it wasn't that bad and there are some notable successes. The reason it isn't as bad as some will tell you is because most outlets compare the volume of cars sold last month to the same month in 2007, rather than comparing the average number of cars sold per day. Since there were two extra selling days last year 28 vs. 26, looking at the raw numbers is very misleading. All of our numbers below represent the change... Full article...

Detroit Big Three and Toyota post double-digit March sales drops
Detroit's Big Three automakers and Toyota all posted double-digit U.S. sales declines in March, mostly on sliding demand for trucks and sport utility vehicles. General Motors Corp. said it delivered 282,732 vehicles in the month, down 19.1 percent from 349,866 a year ago. Hardest-hit were full-sized trucks, offset by demand for smaller sedans, crossovers and the popular Cadillac CTS. Chrysler LLC sold 166,386 units in March, down 19.4 percent from 206,435 in 2006. The Chrysler Sebring, Jeep Compass and... Full article...

Auto sales plummet; worse may be ahead
Detroit's automakers and their top Japanese rivals all suffered March sales declines in a market that sank to its weakest level since 2005 as the dual impact of a slowing economy and a credit crunch kept consumers away from showrooms. The weaker-than-anticipated sales led some auto executives to caution that demand might fall further before it starts to recover. "I'd like to be able to tell you that the worst is behind us, but I can't give you that assurance," said Jim Farley, global sales chief at Ford... Full article...

Axle strike may threaten Malibu
The strike at auto parts maker American Axle could threaten production of General Motors Corp.'s hot-selling Chevrolet Malibu sedan, sources familiar with the situation said Monday. The recently launched Malibu is a critical product for GM and already is in short supply. So far the only GM factories affected by the United Auto Workers union work stoppage have been ones that produce slower selling large trucks and full-size sedans. American Axle & Manufacturing Holdings Inc. doesn't directly supply parts... Full article...

Auto briefs
General Motors Corp . on Thursday said a parts shortage created by the more-than-month-long strike at American Axle will force the automaker to idle its Detroit-Hamtramck assembly plant after today. The plant, which produces the Cadillac DTS and Buick Lucerne sedans, will be the first car-building factory shut down by the strike. Until now, only production of slow-selling full-size trucks and SUVs, and parts used to make them, have been affected by the stoppage. GM Spokesman Dan Flores said the sole... Full article...

Sneak peek: Cadillac CTS Coupe
This stylish coupe will be built alongside the CTS sedan at the Lansing Grand River Plant. The coupe will feature a backup camera that is not currently found on the sedan. The coupe also won't have traditional door handles, but a touch pad setup instead. Styling wise, it follows the concept very closely. Even the dual exhaust will make production. Only the concept front end may see a modest toning down to bring it inline with the CTS sedan. Sources speculate that name may actually be CTC when it reaches... Full article...

GM's retail consolidation will form "luxury superstores"
Among the many ills plaguing automakers, and General Motors in particular, is an excessive amount of dealers selling their wares through competing outlets. GM has decided to rectify the matter by combining its top three "luxury" marques – Cadillac, HUMMER and Saab – into megastores that aim to provide consumers with a variety of choice without watering down each brand's distinct niche. The plan involves consolidating the 1,400 Cadillac dealerships with the 238 Saab and 170 HUMMER outlets to...
