Winter's coming. That means stocking up on de-icer fluid for the windshield washer reservoir and digging out the old snow scraper and jumper cables. Or you might want to buy a new set of jumper cables because the technology has just taken a big leap forward. It used to be you had to be very careful to connect the positive and negative terminals of your vehicle's battery to those of the car that you're jumping or that was jumping you. The Infiniti G: Brains and beauty | detnews.com | The Detroit News
The addition of the hardtop has transformed convertibles from Sunday summer strollers to everyday drivers. For the most part, they look like regular cars, drive like regular cars and generally feel like them. But then touch a single button and the three-piece roof folds up smartly into the trunk, and all of sudden everything ordinary becomes better. For those who want it all, hardtop convertibles make it possible. Earlier this year, Infiniti introduced the 2009 G convertible. The word "ordinary" and... Full article...

Volkswagen is growing by buying new brands and building new facilities. In the end of 2007 the company built an assembly plant in Kaluga, Russia where it started building Volkswagen Passat and Skoda Oktavia. From the beginning the German automaker planned to expand the capacity by 2009 and assemble up to 150,000 vehicles in the facility. The 10,000 sq m building is going to give jobs to 3,000 workers by the end of this year. The representative of Volkswagen Group Rus, Natalia Gorelikova, says that at... Full article...

Volkswagen revealed an e-Up electric show car along with new sporty cars loaded with horsepower, and PSA Peugeot Citroen showed an electric car based on Mitsubishi Motors... Full article...

VW showcases range of new models in Frankfurt | detnews.com | The Detroit News
-- In a scene reminiscent of General Motors in its happier days, Volkswagen AG rented out a big hall here to display a slew of new models. They ranged from humble Volkswagens to roaring roadsters, in the most extravagant soiree of the Frankfurt Motor Show. The variety of cars on display "demonstrate that we have not only the widest range of brands but the best, and something for every customer," said Volkswagen Chief Executive Martin Winterkorn. Among the new models was an ultra-clean VW-brand electric... Full article...

Autos ready to shine anew | detnews.com | The Detroit News
Last fall, as auto executives gathered for Europe's biggest car show, the industry teetered on the precipice of the worst downturn in 30 years. This week, executives from a recomposed auto industry convene in Frankfurt in a cautiously optimistic mood: "The worst is behind us," said Christoph Strmer, an analyst at forecasting firm IHS Global Insight. Now, he said, "the feeling is, we've passed it, we've survived it, we're still in business." Still, industry executives and analysts remain apprehensive... Full article...

Behemoths to the fore in Frankfurt as sales window threatens to shut | detnews.com | The Detroit News
-- It will be like going to one of Frank Sinatra's final performances for visitors to the Frankfurt Car Show. They will come away saying we might never see the likes of that again. Children and grandchildren will one day hear barely believable tales of long extinct, gas guzzling 150 mph beasts like Rolls-Royces, Bentleys, Ferraris, Aston Martins, Jaguars and Porsches which were on show at the 2009 Frankfurt Car Show. Anybody could buy them, as long as they had the money. The global car industry is on... Full article...

Volkswagen Changes Porsche Politics
Volkswagen is really working on the restructuring plan for Porsche. After all the details of the merge will be settled, the German automaker wants to make a “massive U-turn in Porsche’s product plan”. The fans of latest Cayenne SUV and Panamera sport sedan should hurry up and purchase the last vehicles before their production stops completely. Volkswagen agrees with some critics saying that the small sport-carmaker has damaged its reputation staring building heavyweight off-roaders and sedans... Full article...

Mercedes pleases diesel lovers | detnews.com | The Detroit News
The argument for more diesels coming to America continues to fall on deaf ears. People have told me: They don't like the fuel's smell. They worry about breathing particulates. Diesel costs more than gasoline sometimes. There are a host of other excuses why America shouldn't have diesel cars and trucks. There are some diesel trucks available. American auto executives will offer another set of excuses, such as exhaust treatment kits, diesel powertrain markups and lack of consumer interest. I'm a consumer... Full article...

Aston Martin DBS Volante: A beautiful idea | detnews.com | The Detroit News
I understand the Aston Martin DBS Volante is not for everybody. Not everyone will care for a $300,000, 12-cylinder, open-top super car that looks like love feels and sounds like whiskey tastes. But if you are one of these people -- these nugatory finger-waggers, these buzz-killing harpies of righteous socialism -- please, sit next to someone else at dinner. I will stick a fork in your eye. Yes, of course it's a car for rich jackasses, preening showoffs and enviro-criminals. Really, what part of Aston... Full article...
