Foreigners seek access to untapped lithium | detnews.com | The Detroit News
UYUNI, Bolivia -- In the rush to build the next generation of hybrid or electric cars, a sobering fact confronts automakers and governments seeking to lower their reliance on foreign oil: Almost half of the world's lithium, the mineral needed to power the vehicles, is found in Bolivia -- a country that may not be willing to surrender it easily. Japanese and European companies are busily trying to strike deals to tap the resource, but a nationalist sentiment about the lithium is building quickly in the... Full article...

Luxury car crossovers expected to revive sales | detnews.com | The Detroit News
The new car market may be severely depressed but automakers are counting on one segment to buck the downward trend. The industry expects consumer interest in small premium crossovers to grow and consequently the number of entries in the sector is expanding dramatically. The upscale small sport utility vehicle format was successfully established several years ago by Lexus with the RX300, and since then a few primary rivals have emerged, such as the Acura MDX, Infiniti EX35 and BMW X3. But this year a... Full article...

Cleaner engines fuel the future | detnews.com | The Detroit News
I sincerely hope you walked the aisles of the just-ended Detroit auto show. Amid these gloomy times, the Detroit Auto Dealers Association put on a solid event that demonstrated, among other things, that Detroit may be down, but we're a long way from being out. There were cars and trucks on display that anybody would be proud to drive -- from the Chevy Camaro pony car to the super-efficient Ford Fusion Hybrid. A major trend of the show was the greening of our cars and trucks, and technology is taking the... Full article...

Detroit auto show's electric promises belie internal combustion reality | detnews.com | The Detroit News
Listening, watching and reading the international media's reporting on the Detroit car show, you could be forgiven for thinking that we will soon all be zipping around noiselessly in environmentally neutral electric cars. Ford said it will have battery-powered vans in 2010 and an electric Ford Focus-size sedan in 2011. Mercedes Smart already has a battery-powered little city runabout. BMW's electric Mini, being evaluated on the road by prospective customers mainly in California, is said to achieve 150... Full article...
