Abt tunes the VW Touareg TDI
Turbodiesel motors are getting lots of press lately, and VW group vehicles are garnering much of that attention. Audi’s R8 looks to be getting a V8 TDI motor soon, and the Jetta TDI Cup in the U.S. is helping to bring diesels back into the American public’s consciousness, albeit slowly. German performance tuner Abt has already done most of VW’s lineup, but now it’s turning attention to the latest Touareg 3.0 TDI. Focusing on power upgrades and appearance modifications, the Abt... BMW 1-series can fly; too bad it's heavy and ugly
Let's begin with a verity, an undeniable truth that is evident from 3 feet away or from the cold distance of outer space: The new 1-series BMW is ugly. Seriously ugly. Ugly with X-wings locked in attack formation. I know an ugly car when one blows past me at 100 mph. Ugly cars are unusual, for very good reasons. Auto companies are vast organizations, with billions of dollars invested, and tens of thousands of employees, some of whom can actually pick out their own ties. Also, in an age of computer-aided... Finally today is the first day when the show starts and will take place for 10 days till March 30. This year New-York started earlier. Geneva Auto Show has been finished two weeks ago and the New-York Show starts right after it. Kelley Blue Book hands out 2008 Brand Image Awards
Automakers work very hard at the branding process, which takes years and years of effort to achieve. For instance, when a consumer hears Porsche, he or she likely sthink of sports cars and iconic design principles -- despite the fact that the German brand sells plenty of SUVs, too. And when a brand starts to get a negative image, it can take years to overcome that bad stigma -- just ask Ford. So, with all of this in mind, Kelley Blue Book has announced the winners of its 2008 Brand Image Awards, which... Full article...

Low dollar forces Audi to cancel U.S. Q7 hybrid plans
The low U.S. dollar has caused a number of carmakers to readjust their strategies, including canceling models and moving production. The latest vehicle to fall victim to the falling dollar is Audi’s upcoming Q7 hybrid, which will no longer be offered in the U.S. The green SUV was originally meant to reach the U.S. early next year but its launch in the world’s biggest car market has been ruled out indefinitely because there was no business case for it given the state of the dollar. The information... Full article...

Lexus brand isn't flying in Toyota's home market
In trying to establish a Japanese-market foothold for Lexus, Toyota has seemingly fallen prey to the same tactic that made the Cadillac Cimmaron such a maroon. When trying to launch a brand, especially an upscale brand, it's not advisable to rebadge existing models and crank up the price. It doesn't seem to matter how good the car is, or how swanky the new $10-million-a-pop showroom is, once an Altezza, always an Altezza, and paying 20 percent more for the same car with a different logo is rightfully... BMW 1 Series offers great ride, but comes with steep price tag
Finally, a BMW under $30,000 that is not used, reclaimed from New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina or sold in the back lot of a chop shop. Of course, if you decide to add an HD Radio and iPod adaptor, or Xenon headlights, or pay sales taxes, the 2008 BMW 1 Series is going to top the 30-grand threshold. I like the luxury European compact cars now rolling onto America's streets. It's an interesting segment to watch, and one that's going to continue to grow. The Audi A3 and the Volvo C30 rev well in the... Full article...

Rare time a Bentley will not stick out
Dear Tom and Ray: I am an older woman who has just taken a vice presidential position with a company that is virtually all male and, thus, I do not want to display my profound ignorance about cars. The company has said that it will provide me with a car to use, BUT it must be one that reflects the company's success and status. Translated, that means I have to choose something fancier than the 2000 Lexus I currently drive. I am, frankly, looking for comfort. I like leather seats, and I want roadside... Full article...

Mitsubishi Lancer Evo X
DrivingThis car is all about performance, and the Evo X delivers incredible pace. It’s available in three power outputs, and even the base 290bhp car accelerates from 0-62mph in 4.7 seconds. The engine is a gem, but the big news is the availability of a VW DSG-style twin-clutch transmission, called Sport Shift Transmission. Lightning-quick changes make this one of the best semi-autos we have ever tried. The car’s handling is also brilliant. Lots of technology means that grip is super and... Full article...
