White House gets bailout plan, but negotiations continue | The Detroit News | detnews.com
WASHINGTON -- Congressional Democrats sent a $15 billion bailout bill to the White House to prevent General Motors Corp. and Chrysler LLC from collapsing, tying government loans to tough restructuring conditions and firm oversight by a "car czar." The White House and Congress were still wrangling late Monday over final details, including whether to bolster the restructuring requirements and a provision to bar automakers from suing states over vehicle emissions standards. But the legislation appeared on... Full article...

LUXURY CAR PORSCHE PANAMERA
For Porsche, the 911 has been both a blessing, and a curse. A blessing in that it has seems to have transcended the usual automotive evolutionary process; a curse in that the car still, in many ways, defines the entire company. Porsche has attempted to break the mold numerous times over the past three decades -- remember the 928, and the 924/944/968? But until the Boxster -- a clever product development by former R&D chief Horst Marchart that delivered two cars the 996 edition 911 and the Boxster --... Full article...

New round of Aston Martin One-77 shots
Despite Aston Martin's efforts to keep the One-77 supercar under wraps, four images have leaked out and we expect more to follow in the coming days.Viewed in profile, the One-77's silhouette is pure Aston, taking all the right cues from its predecessors and forming them into a slightly elongated and exaggerated form. The massive grille is an obvious nod to the Astons of yore, but the hood delves deeper than its DB9 and Vantage counterparts and benefits from four contoured strakes terminating into a set... 2009 Artega GT - New VW-Powered Sports Car
Powered by a 300hp 3.6 ltr VW. Claimed top speed of 167 mph. Aluminum space frame. Six speed direct shift gearbox. Designed by Henrik Fisker of Aston Martin fame. More details and photos will be posted when they become available. CL  Yes, there's a little Porsche Cayman there, and the Artega GT does have a 3.6-liter Volkswagen-sourced V-6 engine, so there is sort of a link to the family. But the styling, penned by Henrik Fisker, is cleaner than a Cayman. Fisker is, after all, the man responsible... Full article...

Swedish Sell-A-Thon! Ford reconsiders selling Volvo
Ford announced today that it's "re-evaluating strategic options for Volvo Car Corporation", which in plain English means that it may sell the Swedish brand that it's owned since 1998. The Dearborn-based automaker says this re-evaluation will take about three months, during which Ford and Volvo will work together as they always have. While the sale of Volvo will be no doubt be decided upon during this time, Ford has also said it will be working on propping Volvo up as a stand-alone business since the... Full article...

Aston Martin axing 600 jobs to reduce costs
It looks like Ford got rid of Aston Martin just in time. With sales falling just about everywhere, Aston was hardly immune, so the automaker has announced plans to cut up to 600 jobs in the near future. The company is currently working with its union to cut 300 jobs from both the permanent and temporary worker ranks. Aston Martin joins Bentley which is also making cuts in response to the now official recession that the economy has descended into. Prior to Ford selling off the brand, Aston was believed... Howes: Shared denial takes Big 3 to brink | The Detroit News | detnews.com
The stakes could not be any higher -- for Detroit's automakers, the United Auto Workers, salaried employees, tens of thousands of retirees and communities around the country. As GM, Ford and Chrysler today deliver their turnaround plans to Congress, preconditions for any action on $25 billion in bridge loans, they're implicitly acknowledging what their critics have said for years: That their survival depends on draconian cuts essentially amounting to a bankruptcy restructuring without the Chapter 11... GM Asks FAA To Keep Jet Movements Confidential
General Motors Corp whose chief executive was blasted last week by US lawmakers for flying on a private jet to ask for public funds, has asked the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration to prevent public tracking of a jet it leases."We availed ourselves of the same option as others have," to have the plane removed from the FAA's tracking service, a GM spokesman, Greg Martin, said Thursday. He declined to comment on why GM made the request or when the company expects the FAA to decide whether to... BMW And German Brands Worry Openly About the Biggest Crisis Since WWII
More than 1.5 million workers in Germany depend on the automobile industry for their jobs. But that industry is now facing one of its worst crises ever. Respected giants BMW and Mercedes are particularly exposed as sales plummet.  It was time for Martin Winterkorn to relax.
