Cash for Clunkers Is Nearly Over
Cash for Clunkers is up and running, but many believe that it will not last as long as it was supposed to. The arrangers of the program had two limits: either run it till November 1, or till the time the Department of Transportation will run out of money set apart for CARS: $1 billion.Americans really loved the program and by the amount of “clunkers” given up at the participating dealerships it becomes obvious that the program will not last long. According to rumors the Department of... Full article...

'Clunkers' program gives Ford a boost | detnews.com | The Detroit News
As the federal government looks to add billions more to the "cash for clunkers" program, at least one Detroit automaker is attributing a boost in July sales to the popular effort. Ford Motor Co. will report its first monthly year-over-year sales gain in nearly two years today, thanks to a much-needed push from the program, company officials said Sunday. The Dearborn automaker would not provide specific figures until today. The $1 billion federal program to retire less efficient vehicles is all but out... Full article...

2009 BMW Z4 boasts hideaway hard top | detnews.com | The Detroit News
The proportion of hard tops to soft tops for convertibles and sports cars continues to evolve -- but not in the way you might think. Increasingly, manufacturers are equipping their droptops with folding metal contraptions, despite their complexity and cost. The latest example: the 2009 BMW Z4, the first roadster from the Bavarian manufacturer with a hideaway hard top. It succeeds the Z4 Roadster and Coupe. Others that have recently installed hard tops include Volkswagen's Eos, Infiniti's G37, Chrysler's... Full article...

Henry Ford puts rock center stage | detnews.com | The Detroit News
Long before Planet Hollywood, E!, Graceland, or myspace.com, there were few opportunities to explore the personal side of musicians other than song lyrics. And musicians had few outlets other than radio, the stage and album covers to burnish their brand. For many fans, it was rare to see an actor or musician personalized -- at home or behind the wheel. In 1968, Janis Joplin bought a late model Porsche 356c Cabriolet and ordered a dramatic psychedelic custom paint job with moons, Capricorns, butterflies... Full article...

Concours d'Elegance salutes the finest Big 3 iron, fins and ragtops | detnews.com | The Detroit News
When the futuristic Fiat 8V Supersonic -- styled like a Ghia -- debuted at the 1953 Paris Motor Show, it was an immediate stunner. Journalists pegged the aluminum-bodied sports car built by a famous coachbuilder on a Fiat chassis as a legitimate rival to Ferrari and Maserati. U.S. automakers -- always on the lookout for the next styling hit -- were equally impressed and quickly snapped one up when it became available for sale. It seemed a bargain compared to another sensation introduced at the same time... Full article...

SRX continues Cadillac's evolution | detnews.com | The Detroit News
Vehicles do not come with pituitary glands. They don't slowly grow from one form to another, undergoing painful transformations and Peter Brady voice changes. They follow a more Darwinian path, evolve or die. As Cadillac continues with its evolution, it has adopted a more family look throughout its lineup. Now, it can welcome the 2010 Cadillac SRX into the fold. The five-passenger luxury crossover sheds its squared-off corners for a curvier body, creates a more luxurious interior and beefs up its... Fiat develops its own models using Chrysler technologies and plants and going firmly to the parts of the world auto market where it has not been before, but the production of Chrysler projects was a mystery to the public. Mercedes-Benz SLS eDrive
Mercedes-Benz is planning to launch the production of electric supercar in 2015. At this time the project is being developed by AMG engineers. The green car is based on the new SLS supercar, so it will hold the same name: SLS eDrive. The presentation of Mercedes-Benz SLS is going to be in September at the 2009 Frankfurt Auto Show. Its plug-in sibling is not coming because the project is in its primary stage of development. However, it is already announced that the electric SLS is going to have the same... Full article...

Porsche CEO steps down, making way for VW merger | detnews.com | The Detroit News
-- Porsche chief executive Wendelin Wiedeking is leaving the luxury sports car maker after 16 years at the helm, a move widely expected to clear the way for a merger with Volkswagen AG. The board for Porsche Automobil Holding SE said Thursday that Wiedeking, 56, and chief financial officer Holger Haerter, 53, were leaving with immediate effect from the heavily indebted company that makes the 911, among other models. Ford Taurus grows up strong | detnews.com | The Detroit News
Nothing lasts forever. Whether by bad luck, bad design or the stars just stop aligning; every good and bad thing passes. But that doesn't mean it can't come back: Cinderella may have cleaned a lot of fireplaces, but even she got hitched. The Ford Taurus arrived three decades ago with a youthful vigor that would propel it to become the No. 1 sedan in America. It was a winner, a juggernaut, the San Francisco 49ers of the '80s with Joe Montana in the driver's seat. But Montana split for the Kansas City... Full article...
