Chrysler LLC will put up to 150 employees of its Kenosha, Wis., engine plant on indefinite layoff starting March 23. The move is in response to languishing auto sales, said Chrysler spokeswoman Shawn Morgan. To avoid closing the plant completely the company will reduce the speed of the two assembly lines, a move that requires fewer workers, Morgan said. The plant employs about 800 workers, including about 630 members of the United Auto Workers union. The moves do not affect Chrysler's plans to introduce... Full article...

Dangerous car repossessions rise in the United States | detnews.com | The Detroit News
HALSELL, Ala. -- Alone in his mobile home off a winding dirt road, Jimmy Tanks heard a commotion at 2:30 a.m. just outside his bedroom window: Somebody was messing with his car. The 67-year-old railroad retiree grabbed a gun, walked out the back door and confronted not a thief but a repo man and two helpers trying to tow off the Chrysler Sebring. Shots were fired, and Tanks wound up dead, a bullet in his chest. The man who came to repossess the car, Kenneth Alvin Smith, is awaiting trial on a murder... Full article...

Magna International Inc. reported a fourth-quarter net loss of $148 million; and Southfield-based Federal Mogul Corp. reported a net loss of $468 million for the year. Both companies separately said sagging global demand for autos hurt sales, but their liquidity will see them through a tough 2009 and potentially... Full article...

The head of the California New Car Dealers Association on Tuesday asked the Treasury Department to provide immediate financial assistance, warning that thousands of dealers nationwide could close their doors this year. In 2008, nearly 10 percent of car dealers in California closed their doors, including 137 of the roughly 1,400 new car dealers. That pace has increased this year, with 23 additional Golden State dealers closing in the first seven weeks of 2009, said Peter Welch, head of the California... Full article...

Sneak peek: 2011 F-250 Super Duty | detnews.com | The Detroit News
The 2011 Super Duty is expected to receive a major styling refresh, similar to the extent of the 2008 model year update. The current blue oval heavy-dutys took their exterior inspiration from the mighty Ford F-350 Tonka concept that debuted at the 2002 Detroit auto show. The practice round for the 2011 model appears to be the bold Ford F-250 Super Chief Concept, first shown at the 2006 Detroit auto show.
