This is one such timepiece. The Hamilton U.S. 66 Power Reserve has a striking and unusual design clearly aimed at automotive enthusiasts. Take the case, which almost seems to be shaped like a speedway. The dial looks like a tachometer if not so overtly as the special Alfa Romeo watch we...

Investor bails, Delphi's bankruptcy exit stymied
WASHINGTON -- Delphi Corp. hit another major bump on its road out of bankruptcy Friday after Appaloosa Management LP, the company's lead investor, backed out of a deal to pump up to $2.55 billion into the supplier. Delphi had hoped to close Friday on the financing that would have allowed it to emerge from bankruptcy within days. Instead, the pullout will further delay its exit by weeks, if not months. The Troy supplier has struggled to raise capital in tight credit markets nearly 2 1/2 years after it...

GM workers face hard sell on buyouts
General Motors Corp. next week will begin enticing thousands of veteran workers to leave the company for good by dangling the promise of a fresh start and maybe even a new car. The automaker, which badly needs to trim its ranks to help slash U.S. labor costs, says it won't coerce workers to take the buyout offers and retirement incentives going out to its hourly work force. But GM will try to put an upbeat spin on the daunting prospect of giving up the vaunted wages and benefits of a Big Three factory...

Lesson of the day: Don't hide your spare keys in your car
This one may seem like a no-brainer, but it's probably not a good idea to hide the spare keys for your first and second car inside your... uh, car. Perhaps you can already tell where we're going with this... for the sake of the story, though, we'll continue. What might happen if your car were stolen? You'd be giving a thief keys to the car they just stole, plus, as a bonus, the keys to your other car.Unfortunately for at least one man, the scenario in the preceding paragraph is a true story. "We believe...

Carmakers forced to raise prices
We could be in store for a sharp rise in vehicle prices as carmakers are forced to deal with unfavorable exchange rates, rising raw material prices and new fuel-economy and emissions regulations. These factors are increasing cost pressures on carmakers and it appears the burden will likely be passed on to consumers. GM has confirmed that it’s considering raising its prices to offset these cost pressures. Speaking with Automotive News, GM CFO Ray Young said the carmaker is looking at applying price...

Flipside: Is crash safety endangering accident victims?
Crash safety ratings are a big selling point – who's going to buy a car with just two stars? In pursuit of salable collision performance, automakers have turned to stronger metals and better construction, and consumers can reap the benefit by choosing from a panoply of highly rated vehicles. A problem arises, however, if that safety design is ever called upon to perform. Lots of vehicles now sport high strength steel in critical areas like roof pillars, and while it certainly helps protect...
