Next Mustang and Falcon to share new RWD platform
In a move similar to GM’s plan to bring rear-drive Australian vehicles to U.S. shores, rival carmaker Ford is also planning to beef up its product lineup with some much needed RWD models. The new cars will be based around a single platform, in line with Ford’s new strategy of global platform sharing, and will eventually spawn the next-generation Mustang and Falcon models current version pictured as well as new sedans for both Ford North America and Lincoln. Despite Australia’s expertise in RWD...

Autocar ranks 100 top F1 drivers of all time
Autocar has listed the top 100 Formula 1 drivers of all time, as declared by British motorsport journalist Alan Henry. We won't spoil the top-of-the-list surprise for you, but of course, as with all of these things, some of the placings could be a little controversial. At least until one realizes that there haven't really been that many F1 drivers in the 62-year history of the sport. Still, Mika Hakkinen at #10 in front of Michael Schumacher at #11 strikes us as somewhat odd. And Barrichello and Button...

UAW leaders to discuss further cuts | The Detroit News | detnews.com
United Auto Workers Local 22 in Detroit has the eerie, empty feel of so many UAW locals these days. The main plant it once served, the Clark Street Cadillac plant, was demolished almost 15 years ago. Its active membership stands at 1,582, a shadow of its 13,000-plus peak 30 years ago. Most offices in the local are vacant due to staff layoffs and many corridors are dark to try to save money on the electric bill. "Now, we're cutting bone," said President George McGregor, who will slash his own salary in...

Foley is parting with beloved Corvette
Attention, political and hot rod junkies: Now's your once-in-a-lifetime chance to own a little red Corvette once driven by the speaker of the House of Representatives. That's right, former Speaker Tom Foley's 2001 shiny Corvette convertible is up for sale. Much to the Washington Democrat's chagrin. Foley, 79, now largely retired as a lobbyist with Akin Gump, is no longer driving. But it sounds as though he'll always have a soft spot for the car. "He loves that red Corvette," says Foley's wife, Heather...

Auto briefs | detnews.com | The Detroit News
Nissan Motor Co. , Japan's third-largest automaker, had its credit rating cut by Standard & Poor's as the global recession saps demand for new vehicles and a strong yen erodes earnings. The carmaker was downgraded one level to BBB, the second lowest investment grade, and given a stable outlook, S&P said in a statement Monday. The move ends a review started Feb. 10. The ratings change may raise borrowing costs for Nissan, which has to repay 757 billion yen $8.1 billion in bonds and loans maturing this...

Obama says U.S. can't let Big 3 fail | detnews.com | The Detroit News
WASHINGTON -- President Barack Obama scolded the domestic carmakers Tuesday night for "years of bad decision making," but said "the nation that invented the automobile cannot walk away from it." In a speech to a joint session of Congress, the new president offered no details as to how he would help the industry restructure, and no promise to grant the billions of dollars in new aid that General Motors and Chrysler seek. But it was his strongest commitment yet to preserving the companies that have...
