UK Department for Transportation to set standards for satnav systems
The UK's Department for Transportation DfT is trying to put an end to situations like the one you see above. A woman headed to a christening party, paying attention to her satnav -- and little else, apparently -- drove down a road marked "Unsuitable for motor vehicles," and then drove into a swollen river because that's what her navi told her to do. The DfT wants satnav makers to improve their directions, and also wants them to start providing alternate routes depending on the particular car. In...

Alfa may buy closed factory from Big 3 for U.S. production
The Italians are coming, the Italians are coming! And when they get here in the guise of Alfa Romeo, they will be looking for a factory where the 8C and other cars wearing the cross and serpent can be built. Alfa is looking at two options regarding a U.S.-based factory: buy one of GM, Ford, or Chrysler's closed factories, or expand a Case New Holland factory.Case New Holland, which is actually owned by Alfa, makes agricultural machinery and construction equipment. It already has 11 plants in the U.S....

Autoline on Autoblog with John McElroy
A few blogs back I wrote about how Chrysler is going to combine its three brands and start eliminating overlapping models. The idea is to have Dodge concentrate on trucks and work-utilities, with Chrysler exclusively selling cars, and Jeep offering only SUV-based Jeeps. It's a bold plan, but a risky one. And while I see the logic in what they're trying to achieve, I don't agree with parts of it. Specifically, I wrote in my blog that no matter what happens, they ought to keep the Dodge Viper. Well, so...

De Tomaso Pantera revival could be based on the Gallardo
click on the pic above for a gallery of 11 shotsWe've heard rumblings of a De Tomaso Pantera revival for the last year or so, and now reports are appearing that suggest that the new car, if it ever sees the light of day at all, may not be the same Ford-powered mid-engined supercar that we've come to know and love. We could deal with the idea that the name might have to be changed to Panthera instead of Pantera, but basing the once Ford-powered classic on Lamborghini architecture as our source suggests...

CARB backs off a bit on ZEV Mandate, orders 66k PHEVs sold by 2014
The California Air Resources Board CARB voted last week to revise its ZEV zero-emissions vehicle Mandate that was first adopted in 1990 and has since been changed five times now. The newest revisions ease up on automakers, now calling for 7,500 zero-emission vehicles to be sold in California between 2012 and 2014, down from 25,000 that were called for in the last revision made in 2003. A zero-emissions vehicle includes a pure electric vehicle or one powered by a hydrogen fuel cell, though CARB also...

Click image for a photo gallery of the Geely CE conceptVia Autoblog Chinese, the parade of Beijing-bound debuts continues. Today we've got another one from Geely, which seems to be working to establish itself as a style leader in a sea of Chinese cars, the looks of which range from the vanilla to the bizarre. Hedge fund halts withdrawals
WASHINGTON -- A $2 billion New York hedge fund with large auto sector holdings told investors they could temporarily not withdraw funds, amid heavy losses in its auto and airline holdings. "The actions we have taken will allow us to protect the funds and their investors from the external short-term pressure of the broader financial markets," New York-based Pardus Capital Management LP said in an e-mailed statement. "The funds have been disproportionately affected by recent market volatility." Pardus...

Auto briefs
DETROIT -- A federal bankruptcy court judge on Monday approved Delphi Corp. 's request to extend deadlines with General Motors Corp . and the Internal Revenue Service as it attempts to line up the financing it needs to exit from bankruptcy. The agreement with the IRS, which was set to expire Monday, will now expire April 7. Under the agreement, the IRS will continue pension-funding waivers first granted in 2007. Without the waivers, Delphi says it could face a tax claim of $1.4 billion, which it says...

Axle strike could limit supply of hot-selling Chevy Malibu
The strike at parts maker American Axle could threaten production of General Motors Corp.'s hot-selling Chevrolet Malibu, sources familiar with production of the vehicle said today. The recently launched Malibu is a critical product for GM and already is in short supply. Until now the only GM factories affected by the United Auto Workers work stoppage have been ones that produce slow selling large trucks and full-size sedans. American Axle doesn't directly supply components for the Malibu, but the parts...
