Chrysler could cut top-end Avenger and Sebring
Cutting models while adding value to existing mid-range trims could be the new tactic at Chrysler as it fights to regain sales and stability in the turbulent market. The changes are wrapped up in a plan called “Fight Back” that the carmaker is rolling out to parts suppliers this week, and things are set to kick off with a realignment of the Dodge Avenger and Chrysler Sebring lines. What the new fighting strategy means is that the Avenger and Sebring may lose their top trim levels while some...

Chrysler to remain unprofitable in 2008
Chrysler CEO Robert Nardelli announced Thursday night that Chrysler will not see a profit at the end of the year. The head of Chrysler was not disappointed though, stating the company was on track to meet the goals it had promised new owner Cerberus Capital Management. While Chrysler hasn’t said when it expects to return to profitability, Nardelli was keen to demonstrate just how willing the carmaker was to turn around its fortunes through producing a quality product. Nardelli told the SAE World...

Chrysler aims to cut costs by 25% over three years
Chrysler has revealed another element of its three year turnaround plan with news today from the carmaker’s purchasing chief John Campi that plans are in place to reduce costs by 25 percent over the next three years. Speaking at a recent supplier conference, Campi said that significant changes in manufacturing and purchasing operations will help reach the target and that any potential savings will be shared among the suppliers as well. Some of the initiatives include a 30 day timeframe for production...

Chrysler's April Sales Sink 18%
Chrysler LLC today reported total April 2008 sales of 147,751 units, which is 23 percent below the same period last year. Overall sales were most affected by slowing truck and SUV demand and a dramatic cut in daily rental-fleet sales. All sales figures are reported as unadjusted.    "The overall decrease in April sales, particularly of pickup trucks, demonstrates that the auto industry continues to be under pressure from the national economy," Vice Chairman and President Jim...

Chrysler considering four-day work week at Toledo Jeep plant
Jeep sales are down. They're way down, in fact, posting a 44-percent drop in their daily sales rate last month. Though the larger 'utes are really dragging down sales, even the once-untouchable Wranger has been feeling the sting of escalating fuel prices, as its blocky shape and 3.8-liter V6 engine conspire to deliver awful fuel mileage. Also selling rather slowly are the Jeep Liberty and Dodge Nitro, which are assembled at the same plant in Northwest-Ohio. In an effort to save costs, Chrysler officials...

New Chrysler aims for profits, quality
Chrysler LLC's top executives have a vision for the automaker that in some ways defies much of what has defined being one of Detroit's Big Three. Their Chrysler will be smaller. It will forge more alliances with other automakers and parts suppliers to gain access to new technology and to make better use of its manufacturing capacity. It will build fewer, but better, cars and trucks that meet changing consumer demands. And it will be profitable. "Just tonnage is not the measurement anymore," Chrysler CEO...

Reports: Chrysler, Fiat discuss partnership | detnews.com | The Detroit News
AUBURN HILLS -- Fiat SpA is holding discussions with Chrysler LLC about taking a stake in the U.S. carmaker and creating a partnership that would allow the Italian automaker to build and sell its small cars in the United States, two publications reported Monday. Unnamed officials familiar with the discussions told The Wall Street Journal and Automotive News that Chrysler would have access to Turin-based Fiat's engine and transmission technology as part of a potential deal. Chrysler spokeswoman Lori...

Chrysler's car plans in question
Reports that Chrysler LLC and Nissan Motor Co. are in discussions to jointly produce midsize cars raise questions about the future of Chrysler's car lineup. If the Auburn Hills automaker is turning to Nissan for help, progress may have slowed or hit a snag in Chrysler's effort to redevelop its midsize cars, analysts said Thursday. That initiative, dubbed Project D, involves a special team of top engineers and designers charged with developing replacements for the Chrysler Sebring and Dodge Avenger...

Choice hits Chrysler's laid-off workers
Hundreds of laid-off Chrysler LLC workers in Sterling Heights are facing the reality of the landmark UAW contract they agreed to last fall as they find themselves choosing between out-of-state posts and the possibility of permanently losing their jobs. This week and last week, they received letters giving them just a few days to accept or decline a job at plants in Wisconsin or Illinois. The workers at Chrysler's Sterling Heights Assembly Plant are among the first of several thousand across the country...

Chrysler: Back to the midsize
In the highly competitive midsize car market, Chrysler LLC's offerings get lost in a sea of Toyota Camrys and Honda Accords. Those Asian models outsell the automaker's Dodge Avenger and the Chrysler Sebring by as much as four-to-one. But the midsize car market is a segment in which the struggling Auburn Hills automaker thinks it can do better and has dedicated a team of about 100 engineers to reshape its models. A competitive entry in the so-called D segment would be very profitable for Chrysler and...
