Chrysler open to more model sharing deals
Chrysler CEO Bob Nardelli has revealed that his company is open to sourcing more models from rival carmakers in its bid to offer more fuel-efficient models and adapt to changing consumer demand. Last month Chrysler signed a deal with Nissan to source the compact Versa hatch to expand its U.S. line-up in return for a large pickup truck, and depending on market conditions we may see even more product swaps. Nardelli said that any further decisions would be based on market demand, and if Chrysler...

Chrysler to cut ‘twins’ from its lineup
With Project Genesis already underway at Chrysler the fat is truly being trimmed in order to turn things around for the ailing car maker. The latest step is an elimination of all ‘twin’ models - cars that look essentially the same, based on the same platform, that target the same buyers, but sold under different brands. Prime examples of the failed ‘twin’ scheme include the Dodge Avenger/Chrysler Sebring pair, the Jeep Liberty/Dodge Nitro, and the Chrysler Aspen/Dodge Durango...

Chrysler to remain unprofitable in 2008
Chrysler CEO Robert Nardelli announced Thursday night that Chrysler will not see a profit at the end of the year. The head of Chrysler was not disappointed though, stating the company was on track to meet the goals it had promised new owner Cerberus Capital Management. While Chrysler hasn’t said when it expects to return to profitability, Nardelli was keen to demonstrate just how willing the carmaker was to turn around its fortunes through producing a quality product. Nardelli told the SAE World...

The Detroit 3 are hoping to change their reputation for chiefly supplying petrol-thirsty SUV’s, with a view to getting small and mid-sized vehicles onto the market as soon as possible and one of the most active among the trio is Chrysler. The carmaker’s co-president and former CEO, Tom LaSorda, has echoed this view, stating that Chrysler is engaged in building a new global mid-sized vehicle under its Project-D program. While Project D focuses on creating a new global mid-size car, Chrysler is...

Design of next-gen Chrysler 300 will be ‘evolutionary’
Chrysler is in the midst of updating its line-up to meet tough new CAFE regulations and help turn around flagging sales, and the bleak situation has already led to a number of important models being dropped altogether. However, it appears the RWD Chrysler 300 is safe for now as the Auburn Hills-based carmaker doesn’t have the budget to radically change its successful large car platform. The 300 will however receive a radical face-lift in 2011 but will maintain the bold styling and low roofline that...

Total sales outside North America for May were up 5% to 21,505 units with year-to-date sales up 7% to 98,188 units, according to IT News. Jim Press thinks the strong international sales...

Fiat in talks with Chrysler, confirms 500 for U.S.
The worsening exchange rate differential between the strengthening euro and weakening U.S. dollar means importing European manufactured models to North America is now significantly more expensive than just a few years ago. It’s a problem Alfa Romeo has to juggle with as it attempts to re-establish itself in the U.S. next year, but there’s hope for the Italian carmaker in the form of idle capacity at American auto plants. The CEO of parent company Fiat, Sergio Marchionne, has hinted at production of...
