Vauxhall introduces new Tigra rag-top

VAUXHALL is converting its coupe-cabriolet to a rag-top for summer, although all is not quite as it seems.

Following the arrival of the BMW 1 Series and Audi A3 convertibles, Vauxhall is aiming to compete by making its tin-top Tigra look like a convertible rather than a coupe-cabriolet with a folding steel roof.

The trick has been to go back to the future with the sort of cloth-covered roof that used to be all the rage in the seventies when sporty models used vinyl on top.

Vauxhall says that despite going to the trouble of developing a sophisticated steel roof that rises from the boot in just 20 seconds some people actually prefer the look of canvas.

Now the company has replaced its Tigra Sport model with the Tigra Sport Rouge to denote its red rag top plus some extra equipment for £15,705.

In addition to the Bordeaux Red-coloured fabric there is a sophisticated sound system with CD player and MP3 jack, sports seats and 16-inch alloy wheels.

The extra-cost VXR pack adds 17-inch alloys, a full leather pack and rear parking sensors plus body styling.

Engine choices are the 1.4-litre and 1.8-litre petrol units plus a 1.3-litre diesel with prices ranging from £15,705 to £17,195.
