-- The U.S. Transportation Department is ramping up efforts to speed payments to dealers under the $3 billion "cash for clunkers" program. By the end of the week, the government will have about 1,100 workers processing voucher payment requests of up to $4,500 each, or triple the current number, by tapping the Enterprise Services Center in Oklahoma City, Okla., a Transportation Department center that supports various agencies, officials said. A government contractor, Citi, also has been hiring temporary workers at its Delaware center to speed the processing of vouchers as some dealers have complained of slow payments. More than half of the 1,100 workers signed up for the project are government employees. Through Monday, dealers have submitted 390,283 vouchers for $1.63 billion. At the current rate, the $3 billion could be used up by early next month. President Barack Obama signed legislation this month to refuel the $1 billion program with another $2 billion after consumers quickly snapped up the first $1 billion in the Car Allowance Rebate System program.
