Hydrogen cars may be a great idea in the future, but they’re not economically viable right now. Hydrogen cars are not a solution right now, but they will be. Twenty years ago people said hybrid cars were not worth persuing. Hydrogen cars drive and feel the same like a normal vehicle, even with added load as a result of hydrogen fuel tank. BMW Hydrogen 7 is another example of hydrogen fuel cell technology. Hydrogen cars do however, have the potential to be better cars than Hybrid Cars in several ways so we need to compare their known characteristics. Hydrogen cars and fuel cells are often promoted as being potentially emission-free if they burn hydrogen, in contrast to currently more common fuels such as methane or natural gas that generate carbon dioxide. However, as mentioned above hydrogen is an energy carrier, not an energy source. Hydrogen cars cannot fly, but they can go like the wind. Hydrogen cars also need to use batteries too. BEVs are being sold sold NOW for a faction of the price without worrying about infrastructure. Hydrogen cars of dubious viability? Who ever could have guessed that in a million years? Hydrogen cars are complex and will require maintenance and parts long after they are driven out of the showroom and this is where all the makers get most of their money. What we really need is electric cars, they only have one moving part in the engine and require almost zero servicing. Hydrogen cars’ only emission is a nice mist of water that you could drink. Hydrogen cars still leave a foot print but not near as much as gasoline engine. Remember you still need lubricants, motor oil, synthetic oil, grease, etc. Hydrogen cars have been in magazines like “Popular Mechanics” for years, new prototype after new prototype, but to what avail? The technology is there, but it will take big business to bring hydrogen to the pump station, to put a hydrogen car on every car lot, and that is exactly what is happening. Hydrogen cars are not nearly as efficient and the technology is not yet ready. RUF technology is ready today. Hydrogen cars are a popular environmental cure-all because they are supposed to dramatically reduce greenhouse gas emissions. A simulation for the Reason Foundation, conducted by chemical engineer William Korchinski of Advanced Industrial Modeling, attempted to estimate the decline in carbon dioxide emissions that would have resulted from switching every car in California to hydrogen fuel in 1981. Hydrogen cars are even farther away from being practical. Carbon-free hydrogen is likely to be more expensive than gasoline for a long time. First, the BMW Hydrogen 7 is a dual fuel ICE not fuel cell vehicle. The BMW can burn either gasoline or hydrogen in its internal combustion engine at the flip of a switch. I've driven it twice.
Second, most hydrogen fuel cell prototypes produced today are also hybrid vehicle, using the best of both technologies.
The largest hurdles with hydrogen cars is not the vehicles themselves but the infrastructure that needs to be built to support them. The Cluster Theory is the most viable as far as putting a large number of hydrogen refueling stations in large urban areas first and then expanding out from there. Also, implementing home hydrogen fueling stations will also help build out the infrastructure.
